IELTS vs PTE Academic
IELTS vs PTE Academic: 0–9 half-bands and a human-marked Speaking interview versus a 10–90 AI-scored test with recorded Speaking. What differs and who it suits.
Both are trusted English tests that measure the same ability but feel different. IELTS reports 0–9 half-bands, marks Listening and Reading objectively, and has human examiners judge Writing and a live Speaking interview. PTE Academic is a 10–90, fully computer-scored test with recorded, microphone Speaking and fast results. Choose by which format suits you and which your route accepts.
IELTS and PTE Academic both prove English for study, work and migration, and thousands of institutions and several governments accept each. The differences are structural rather than one being harder: how the score is reported, whether a person or a machine marks you, and how you sit the Speaking test. This page compares the fixed facts so you can pick by your route and your preferences, not by reputation.
At a glance
The fixed, structural differences — none of these are fees or dates, and acceptance always defers to the official body for your route.
| Dimension | IELTS | PTE Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Scoring scale | 0–9 bands in half-band steps, per skill plus an overall band | 10–90 points, an overall score plus a score for each skill |
| Marking | Listening and Reading objective; Writing and Speaking marked by human examiners against published descriptors | All four skills, including Speaking and Writing, scored fully by computer |
| Speaking format | Live interview with a certified examiner (in person or by video call) | Recorded at a computer — you speak into a microphone, no interviewer |
| Results speed | Computer-delivered usually within a few days; paper-based about two weeks | Usually within a few days, often faster; delivered online |
| Retake / One Skill Retake | One Skill Retake lets you resit a single module where offered (not everywhere); otherwise a full resit | No single-skill retake — resit the whole test, but results return quickly |
| Acceptance breadth | Very wide across study, work, registration and immigration; approved UK SELT as IELTS for UKVI | Wide for study and many visa routes (e.g. Australia, NZ); Canadian economic immigration uses PTE Core, not PTE Academic |
| Typical length | Under three hours for Listening, Reading and Writing, plus a separate Speaking slot | One sitting of roughly two hours covering all skills |
Acceptance is set by each institution and government body and varies by route; figures such as results turnaround also vary by country and centre. Confirm the current requirement and timing on the official source before booking.
Which should you choose?
Choose IELTS if…
- You want your Speaking assessed by a human examiner in a live, interactive interview rather than by a machine.
- Your route names IELTS specifically — many professional regulators and some immigration streams still do.
- You may need to lift only one module and want the option of One Skill Retake, offered in many (though not all) countries.
- You prefer being marked against transparent, published band descriptors for Writing and Speaking.
Choose PTE Academic if…
- You prefer a fully computer-based test with no face-to-face interview and a microphone-based Speaking section.
- You want fast results and a single, roughly two-hour sitting.
- Your target institutions and visa route clearly accept PTE Academic — check the exact variant, as some routes use PTE Core.
- You are comfortable with consistent, machine-marked scoring reported on a 10–90 scale.
How each test is scored and marked
IELTS reports results on a 0–9 band scale in half-band steps — a band for each of the four skills and an overall band rounded from them. PTE Academic uses a 10–90 points scale aligned to the Global Scale of English, giving an overall score plus a communicative score for each skill. A half-band and a point score describe the same underlying ability differently, so moving between them needs a concordance table rather than a direct swap.
The marking method is the bigger divide. On IELTS, Listening and Reading are marked objectively, while Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained human examiners against published band descriptors — the same criteria you can read in advance. PTE Academic is scored entirely by computer: every skill, including Speaking and Writing, is marked by automated scoring engines with no human examiner in the loop.
Neither approach is better in the abstract. Human marking applies judgement to how you develop an argument or sustain a conversation; automated marking is consistent and fast but rewards clear, on-task responses the engine can measure. Candidates often prefer one simply because it matches how they perform under pressure.
Speaking: a live examiner or a recorded response
This is the difference most candidates feel first. IELTS Speaking is a live interview with a certified examiner — a three-part conversation covering an introduction, a short talk from a prompt, and a two-way discussion. It takes place either in person at the test centre or by video call, but there is always a real person responding to you.
PTE Academic Speaking is done at a computer: you wear a headset and speak into a microphone in response to on-screen prompts, and your answers are recorded and machine-scored alongside the rest of the test. There is no interviewer and no back-and-forth conversation.
Which suits you is personal. Some candidates speak more naturally to a person and find the microphone artificial; others freeze in an interview and prefer talking to a screen with no one reacting. Neither format is easier as a rule — they reward slightly different things, so try a sample of each if you can before deciding.
Retakes and results
IELTS offers One Skill Retake in many countries: if you narrowly miss on one module, you can resit just that module within a set window instead of the whole test. It is not available everywhere — it is not offered for tests taken in the USA, for example — and not every accepting body recognises a single-skill result, so confirm both before relying on it.
PTE Academic has no single-skill retake, so a weak module means resitting the full test. Its results, however, are usually returned within a few days and often faster, delivered online. Computer-delivered IELTS results also arrive within a few days, while paper-based IELTS takes roughly two weeks. If turnaround is critical, check the current times for your test centre rather than assuming.
Acceptance: check your exact route before booking
IELTS has the longer track record and the broader acceptance across study, professional registration and immigration, and it appears on government-approved lists — including as the IELTS for UKVI variant used for UK visa routes that require a Secure English Language Test. PTE Academic's acceptance has grown quickly and now covers thousands of universities and many visa routes, including Australia and New Zealand.
Two nuances matter for accuracy. First, some routes use a different Pearson test entirely — for Canadian economic immigration, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic, so the name on the requirement is worth reading carefully. Second, professional regulators and licensure bodies often name specific tests, and some still ask for IELTS or TOEFL rather than PTE.
The safe rule is the one that applies to any English test: acceptance is set by the institution or the government body, not by the test provider, and it varies by route. Alternatives such as the Duolingo English Test or at-home IELTS Online are accepted in some places but not for many immigration and professional-registration routes — always confirm the current requirement on the official page for your specific route before you book.
IELTS band to PTE Academic score
Pearson publishes a concordance aligning IELTS bands with PTE Academic overall scores. It is a broad correspondence, not an exact swap, and it maps overall scores only — institutions and visa routes set their own minimums.
| IELTS band | PTE Academic (overall) | Rough CEFR level |
|---|---|---|
| 8.5 – 9.0 | 84 – 90 | C2 |
| 8.0 | 79 | C1 |
| 7.5 | 73 | C1 |
| 7.0 | 65 | C1 |
| 6.5 | 58 | B2 |
| 6.0 | 50 | B2 |
| 5.5 | 42 | B2 |
Migration authorities usually specify a minimum in each of the four skills rather than an overall score, so a single concordance figure will not settle a visa requirement. Use this as a guide, then confirm the exact per-skill minimum with the official body — the score converter can help you sketch a target.
Common questions
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
There is no reliable sense in which one is easier — they test the same ability and are aligned by a concordance. The real differences are format: PTE marks Speaking and Writing by computer and uses a microphone for Speaking, while IELTS uses human examiners and a live Speaking interview. Whichever matches how you perform under pressure will feel easier to you.
What PTE Academic score equals IELTS 7.0?
On Pearson's published concordance, IELTS 7.0 corresponds to roughly PTE Academic 65 overall, IELTS 6.0 to about 50, and IELTS 8.0 to about 79. That maps overall scores only — migration authorities set a minimum in each of the four skills, so use the concordance as a guide and confirm the exact per-skill requirement with the official body.
Does Canada accept PTE Academic?
For study, many Canadian institutions accept PTE Academic, but for economic immigration — Express Entry and similar programs — Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts PTE Core, which is a different test from PTE Academic. Check which test your specific program names on the official IRCC pages before booking.
Is Duolingo accepted instead of IELTS or PTE?
Sometimes for study, but its acceptance is narrower. The Duolingo English Test is not accepted for many immigration routes or for a number of professional-licensure requirements, where IELTS — or in some cases TOEFL or PTE — is required instead. Confirm on the official page for your route before choosing it over IELTS or PTE.
Is PTE Speaking really marked by a computer?
Yes. PTE Academic scores all four skills, including Speaking and Writing, using automated scoring engines — there is no human examiner. IELTS is the opposite for the productive skills: Writing and Speaking are marked by trained human examiners against published band descriptors, and Speaking is a live interview.
Can I use PTE Academic for a UK visa?
It depends on the route. UK visa routes that require a Secure English Language Test only accept a test on the government's approved SELT list, and IELTS for UKVI is one of them. Whether a Pearson test is currently approved, and for which routes, can change — check the official UK government SELT list for your specific route before booking.
