IELTS preparation for the USA
More than 3,400 US higher-education institutions accept IELTS — including every Ivy League school — and over 99% of US universities that accept TOEFL accept IELTS too. The American twist is that there is no national standard: every institution sets its own requirement, so preparation starts with knowing the number YOUR programs ask for.

What score do US universities actually ask for?
Requirements cluster by tier rather than by rule: community colleges commonly accept 5.5 to 6.0, undergraduate programs typically ask for 6.0 to 6.5, graduate programs 6.5 to 7.0, and the most selective institutions 7.0 to 7.5. Individual departments can set higher bars than their university's minimum — always confirm on the program page, not the general admissions page.
Some institutions publish waiver policies — for example after several years of full-time English-medium schooling — so if you studied in English, check whether your target school waives the test before booking it.

Is there an IELTS minimum for the F-1 visa?
No — and this is the most persistent myth in US-bound preparation. The F-1 student visa has no official IELTS minimum. Consular officers check for a valid Form I-20, which your university issues only after its own English requirement is satisfied. Meet the university's bar and the visa's language question answers itself.
One practical warning for score planning: IELTS One Skill Retake is not available for tests taken in the USA as of 2026, so a weak single module means retaking the full test. Preparing all four modules to target before the first attempt is the economical route.

Practising for the computer-delivered format
US test centres offer computer-delivered IELTS, and its interface — one-play audio with a short check window, on-screen highlighting, typed writing with a live word count — is exactly what CD IELTS Prep reproduces. Training in the same interface means test day tests your English, not your ability to learn new software under a timer.

IELTS to TOEFL iBT conversion
From the 2025 ETS-IELTS Partners concordance study of dual test takers — the mapping admissions offices reference.
| IELTS band | TOEFL iBT range |
|---|---|
| 8.0 | 110-120 |
| 7.5 | 102-109 |
| 7.0 | 94-101 |
| 6.5 | 79-93 |
On Duolingo's official concordance, DET 120 corresponds to roughly IELTS 6.5 — but many programs cap which tests they accept for scholarships, graduate study, or professional licensure, where IELTS remains the safer submission.
Typical IELTS requirements by US destination
Requirements are institution-specific — these are the observed ranges to calibrate your target against, not official minimums.
| Destination | Typical IELTS ask |
|---|---|
| Community colleges | 5.5 - 6.0 |
| Undergraduate programs | 6.0 - 6.5 overall |
| Graduate programs | 6.5 - 7.0 overall |
| Top-tier universities | 7.0 - 7.5 overall |
| Registered nurses (CGFNS VisaScreen) | 6.5 overall, Speaking 7.0, no band below 6.0 — one sitting |
The F-1 visa itself sets no IELTS minimum — the university's I-20 does the qualifying. Nurses: General Training and at-home IELTS Online are not accepted for VisaScreen.

Frequently asked questions
Do US universities prefer TOEFL over IELTS?
No. More than 99% of US universities that accept TOEFL also accept IELTS, including all Ivy League schools. Choose the test whose format suits you and whose score your programs state — the concordance table maps between the two.
What IELTS score do I need for a US student visa?
The F-1 visa has no official IELTS minimum. Universities assess English before issuing the Form I-20, and the consular interview checks the I-20 — so the requirement that matters is your program's, not the visa's.
Which IELTS should I take for the USA — Academic or General Training?
Academic, for admissions and for professional licensure such as nursing. General Training is not accepted for US university admission or for the CGFNS VisaScreen certificate.
Can I retake just one module in the USA?
No — IELTS One Skill Retake is not offered for tests taken in the USA as of 2026. Improving one band means resitting the full test, which makes thorough first-attempt preparation the cheaper strategy.
