How to check your IELTS results online
Check your IELTS results online: sign in to the account you booked with, view the score preview, and see how it differs from your official Test Report Form.
Sign in to the same test-partner account you used to book — British Council or IDP — on your results date. The online preview shows your overall and four module band scores for a limited window, usually about a month. It is unofficial: your certified Test Report Form is issued separately.
Your IELTS results appear online before any document reaches your hands, and the quickest way to see your band scores is to sign in to the account you booked the test with. What you see there is a preview, though — useful for planning, but not the certified result an institution will ask for. Here is how to find it, and how it differs from your official Test Report Form.
Checking your results online, step by step
The process is the same wherever you tested; only the portal branding changes with your test partner.
Wait for the notification
The test partner emails — and often texts — you when your results are ready. It links straight to the online results, so you rarely need to hunt for the page.
Open your test partner's results service
Go to the same organisation you booked with: the British Council candidate service or the IDP results portal. There is no shared national site.
Sign in with your booking details
Use the email and password you registered with, or the candidate ID and date of birth from your booking — whichever your test partner asks for.
View the online preview
Your overall band and the four module scores appear on screen. This is a preview for your information, not an official document.
Save a copy while it is live
Download or print the preview. It stays online only for a limited window before it is removed.
Collect your official Test Report Form
The certified TRF is issued separately — posted, collected, or sent electronically to the institutions you nominated. That is the version anyone official will accept.
Where your IELTS results live
IELTS is delivered by test partners — the British Council and IDP — and your results appear in the account you used to book, with the same organisation. There is no single national results website: if you booked through the British Council you sign in to its candidate service, and if you booked through IDP you use IDP's results portal. The email and password, or the candidate ID and date of birth, that you registered with are your login.
You do not usually have to go looking. When your scores are ready the test partner sends an email, and often an SMS, pointing you to the online results. Some centres run a shared results service and the exact screen varies by country, so if you are unsure which portal is yours, follow the link in that notification or check the official site for your test partner.
The online preview is not your Test Report Form
What you see online first is a preview — your overall band score and the four module bands, laid out on screen for your information. It is genuinely useful: you can plan your next step, decide whether a module needs a retake, and see where you landed days before any paper arrives. But it is clearly marked as unofficial, and an institution will not accept a screenshot of it as proof.
The document that counts is the Test Report Form (TRF). It is the certified record of your result, issued separately — posted to you, collected from the centre, or sent electronically to the organisations you nominate. Increasingly results reach universities and immigration bodies as an electronic TRF the centre sends on your behalf, rather than as a paper copy you hand over. Reading that form correctly is a topic in its own right.
When the preview appears — and how long it stays
Timing depends on how you sat the test. Computer-delivered results come through quickly — usually within a few business days — while paper-based results take longer, around a fortnight. Your results date is set when you book, and the online preview typically goes live on that date, often in the early hours. The exact window varies by test partner and country, so treat the date on your booking, not a rule of thumb, as the one that applies to you.
The preview does not stay up indefinitely. It is available online for a limited window — commonly around a month — and is then taken down. Save, download or print a copy while it is there, so you keep a record even after the online version disappears. If your scores never appear when you expect them, the result may still be processing or under a routine review, rather than lost.
Online preview vs official Test Report Form
Both come from the same result, but they do different jobs. Know which is which before you send anything to a university or visa office.
| Aspect | Online preview | Official Test Report Form (TRF) |
|---|---|---|
| Where you find it | In your test-partner account online | Posted, collected at the centre, or sent electronically to organisations |
| What it is for | A fast, unofficial look at your bands | The certified proof institutions and immigration accept |
| When it appears | On your results date, before the TRF | Issued separately, usually a little later |
| How long you can see it | Online for a limited window, then removed | Kept by you; the result carries its own validity period |
| Accepted as proof? | No | Yes |
Details such as the exact online window and how the TRF is delivered vary by test partner, centre and country — confirm yours on the official source.
Common questions
How soon can I check my IELTS results online?
It depends on how you tested. Computer-delivered results usually appear within a few business days, while paper-based results take longer — around a fortnight. Your booking states your results date; the online preview typically goes live then. Check the official site for your test partner for the exact timing in your country.
What login do I use to see my IELTS results?
The account you booked with. Sign in to the same test partner — British Council or IDP — using the email and password you registered with, or the candidate ID and date of birth from your booking. There is no separate universal results login.
Is the online score preview the same as my Test Report Form?
No. The online preview is an unofficial, on-screen look at your overall and module bands, useful for planning your next step. The Test Report Form is the certified document universities and immigration bodies accept, and it is issued separately — often as an electronic TRF sent directly to the organisations you nominate.
How long do IELTS results stay available online?
The online preview is available for a limited window — commonly around a month — before it is taken down. Download or print a copy while it is live so you keep a record after the online version disappears. The result itself carries its own separate validity period.
Can I use the online preview as proof for a university?
No. The preview is marked unofficial and a screenshot will not be accepted. Institutions and visa offices need the official Test Report Form, which many centres now send electronically to the organisations you name. Nominate your receiving organisations so the certified result reaches them directly.
My results are not showing online — what should I do?
First check you are signed in to the right test partner and past your results date. If the date has passed and nothing appears, the result may still be processing or under a routine review rather than lost. Confirm the timing and any hold on the official source before assuming anything is wrong.
