Academic or General Training: choose the practice that matches your test

Academic and General Training candidates both need careful listening, clear speaking, accurate reading, and controlled writing. The safest plan is still to choose the same test variant you booked, because the Reading material and Writing tasks are not interchangeable.

What actually changes between the routes

Listening and Speaking are the same paper whichever route you booked, so work on those two transfers completely. Reading does not. The Academic paper is three long passages of the kind of writing you meet in study; the General Training paper opens with short everyday and workplace texts before one longer piece. Same hour, same forty questions, a different reading job.

The difference shows up in pacing. On the Academic paper the last passage is usually the densest, so the minutes you save early are the minutes you will need at the end. On the General Training paper the opening texts are short and the answers sit close to the surface, so overspending there is the classic way to reach the final section with ten minutes and one long text still waiting.

Writing is where the split is widest

Task 1 asks for two different things. Academic Task 1 gives you a chart, table, map or process and asks you to report what it shows, with an overview sentence and no opinions. General Training Task 1 gives you a situation and asks for a letter that does a job, covering all three bullet points in a tone that suits the reader. Task 2 is an essay on both routes and carries twice the marks, so an hour spent on the wrong Task 1 buys you very little.

Keep your preparation labelled

• Mark each study plan and saved result as Academic or General Training.
• Use the correct Reading passages when measuring your raw score.
• For Writing Task 1, practise the task style used by your chosen variant.
• Share Listening and Speaking drills only when the skill being trained is genuinely the same.

Choose by purpose, then confirm

Your university, employer, professional body, or immigration pathway decides which result it accepts. Check that requirement directly before booking. A practice website can help you prepare, but it cannot choose the valid test for your application.
