Internationally educated nurses moving to Canada usually face two different IELTS requirements at once: the provincial nursing regulator asks for IELTS Academic (Ontario's CNO requires 7.0 overall with at least 7.0 in Speaking and 6.5 in the other bands), while permanent-residence programs under IRCC accept only IELTS General Training. Many nurses end up sitting both.
What IELTS score do nurses need to register in Canada?
Each province's nursing regulator sets its own English requirement, so the exact bands depend on where you will register. Ontario — the largest destination — is a representative example:

Most provincial regulators also accept CELPIP as an alternative, and their exact minimums differ — always confirm on your own regulator's site before booking a test. The stable pattern across provinces: the test type is Academic, and Speaking carries the highest bar.
Why do nurses often need two different IELTS tests?
Registration and immigration read different papers. Regulators ask for IELTS Academic; IRCC's permanent-residence programs — Express Entry and most Provincial Nominee streams — accept only IELTS General Training, converted to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. An Academic result cannot be converted to CLB for immigration, and a GT result will not satisfy the regulator. Nurses pursuing licence and PR in parallel therefore commonly sit both versions.

The efficient preparation order: train Listening and Speaking first — they are identical papers in Academic and General Training, so every hour transfers to both tests. Then split: Academic Reading and Task 1 report writing for the regulator's test, GT Reading and letter writing for the IRCC test.
