Standard IELTS vs IELTS for UKVI
Standard IELTS and IELTS for UKVI use the same papers and 9-band scale — only the approved centre, security and Test Report Form differ. See which your visa route needs.
The two are the same exam — identical questions, examiners and 9-band scale. IELTS for UKVI is simply a version taken at a UK Home Office-approved centre under extra security, giving a SELT-format Test Report Form some UK visa routes require. Book UKVI only when your visa route demands a SELT; otherwise standard IELTS fits.
Standard IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are not two different exams. You sit the same Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking papers, marked the same way on the same nine-band scale — what changes is where the test is administered and the label on your result. The distinction matters for one practical reason: booking the wrong version for a UK visa can waste the fee, because only the UKVI version counts as a Secure English Language Test.
At a glance
Every scored element is the same. The differences are entirely about how and where the test is administered and what your result certifies.
| Feature | Standard IELTS | IELTS for UKVI |
|---|---|---|
| Test content & difficulty | Identical papers, questions and examiner marking | Identical — the same test material |
| Scoring scale | 9 bands, reported to the nearest half-band | Same 9-band scale, same half-bands |
| Modules & timing | Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking; Speaking 11–14 min | Same modules and timing |
| Formats | Academic or General Training; paper or computer | Academic or General Training; paper or computer |
| Official UK status | Not a UK-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) | Home Office-approved SELT, sat at a UKVI-approved centre under extra security |
| Test Report Form | Standard TRF | UKVI TRF, recording the approved session and its number |
| Validity | 2 years | 2 years |
| Where you book | Any IELTS test session | A UKVI-approved centre and session, chosen at booking |
| Accepted for | Universities, employers, professional registration and immigration worldwide | UK visa routes needing a SELT, plus everywhere standard IELTS is accepted |
An IELTS for UKVI result is accepted anywhere standard IELTS is, but standard IELTS is not accepted where a SELT is required. Whether any test satisfies a specific UK route is set by UK Visas and Immigration and the receiving institution — confirm both before booking.
Which should you choose?
Choose Standard IELTS if…
- Your goal is university or college admission and the institution accepts standard IELTS Academic
- You are applying to Canada, Australia or New Zealand, which use their own systems rather than the UK SELT list
- You need IELTS for professional registration, where many regulators accept the standard test
- Your UK route does not appear on the Home Office's Secure English Language Test requirement
Choose IELTS for UKVI if…
- Your UK visa route requires a Secure English Language Test from the approved list
- You need a Test Report Form showing the test was sat at a UKVI-approved session
- You are applying for a UK visa and are unsure — confirm the requirement, then book UKVI to be safe
- If your route only needs CEFR A1, A2 or B1 speaking and listening, check IELTS Life Skills instead
Same exam, different paperwork
Standard IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are the same test. You answer the same Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking papers, they are marked by the same trained examiners against the same criteria, and the result is reported on the same nine-band scale. There is no easier or harder version, and no separate syllabus to prepare for.
What differs is administrative. IELTS for UKVI is delivered at test centres approved by the UK Home Office, under the additional identity and security procedures set by UK Visas and Immigration. The Test Report Form is then issued in the UKVI format, recording that the test was taken at an approved session. Because the scored content is identical, preparation is identical too — the same mock papers ready you for either.
When you actually need the UKVI version
You need IELTS for UKVI only when your UK visa route requires a Secure English Language Test, or SELT. This covers many work, family and below-degree-level study routes, where the Home Office insists the test comes from its approved list and is sat under monitored conditions. If your route falls in that group, a standard IELTS result will not be accepted, however high your score.
Many situations do not need it. Immigration to Canada, Australia or New Zealand runs on those countries' own systems, which accept standard IELTS. University admission often does too: a UK institution that sponsors students and holds a compliance track record can assess English itself and may accept standard IELTS Academic for a Student visa. Whether your specific route needs a SELT is decided by UK Visas and Immigration — always confirm it on the official guidance.
Why the wrong booking costs you
The two versions are chosen at the point of booking: you select 'IELTS for UKVI' when you register, or you do not. A result's UKVI status comes from the approved, monitored session it was taken in, so it cannot be added later. Book the standard test when your route needs a SELT and the result is unusable for that visa — you would have to book and sit the UKVI version from scratch.
The safeguard is simple. Before you pay, read the English-language requirement for your exact route on the official UKVI pages, note whether it names a SELT and at what CEFR level, and only then choose your test and centre. If you are studying, confirm with the institution whether it requires the UKVI version or will assess your English directly.
IELTS band to CEFR level
UK visa routes state a required CEFR level rather than an IELTS band. This is IELTS's published alignment — treat it as approximate, and always match it against the level your specific route names.
| CEFR | IELTS band | Common context |
|---|---|---|
| C2 | 8.5–9.0 | Near-native proficiency |
| C1 | 7.0–8.0 | Demanding academic or professional routes |
| B2 | 5.5–6.5 | Degree-level study; many skilled work roles |
| B1 | 4.0–5.0 | Many family and work visa routes |
CEFR A1 and A2 (some family and settlement routes) fall below this band scale and are usually evidenced through IELTS Life Skills rather than an Academic or General Training band. The CEFR level your route requires is set by UK Visas and Immigration — confirm it on the official guidance before booking.
Common questions
Is IELTS for UKVI harder than standard IELTS?
No. It is the same test — the same Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking papers, the same examiners and the same nine-band scale. The difficulty is identical; only the security of the session, where you book it, and the format of the Test Report Form differ.
Can I use standard IELTS for a UK visa?
Only where a Secure English Language Test is not required. Routes that demand a SELT — many work, family and below-degree study visas — need IELTS for UKVI. Some UK universities with a student-sponsor track record can assess English themselves and may accept standard IELTS Academic for a Student visa. Confirm your exact route on the official UKVI guidance and with your institution before booking.
Is the Duolingo English Test accepted for UK visas?
The Duolingo English Test is not on the UK Home Office's approved Secure English Language Test list, so it generally cannot be used for UK visa routes that require a SELT. Some UK universities accept it for admission, but that is a separate decision from the visa requirement. Check the official SELT list rather than assuming.
Is IELTS Online accepted for UKVI?
No. The remotely-proctored IELTS Online test is not an approved SELT and cannot be used for UK visa and immigration routes that require one — for those you must sit IELTS for UKVI at an approved centre. IELTS Online is accepted by many universities and organisations for non-visa purposes.
I booked the wrong IELTS — can I convert my result to UKVI?
No. A result cannot be reclassified afterwards; its UKVI status comes from being sat in an approved, monitored session, so a standard result cannot become a UKVI one. If your route needs a SELT you would have to book and sit IELTS for UKVI again — which is exactly why the requirement is worth checking before you pay.
What is IELTS Life Skills, and do I need it instead?
IELTS Life Skills is a separate UKVI test covering Speaking and Listening only, at CEFR levels A1, A2 or B1. Certain family, partner and settlement routes ask for it rather than a full four-skill test. If your route specifies A1, A2 or B1 speaking and listening, Life Skills — not IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training — is likely the one to book.
