IELTS for UK NMC nurse registration
The NMC judges English one skill at a time, and that per-skill rule is what sets this registration route apart. It expects the Academic module of IELTS — never General Training — and reads the Test Report Form as four separate hurdles plus an overall figure, so a confident total cannot paper over one soft module. Speaking, Reading and Listening each sit at 7.0, Writing carries a slightly gentler floor of 6.5, and the overall must reach 7.0; the same standard can also be met through OET, and two test dates can be stitched together under a defined concession.

What the NMC asks for
The registration standard applies to internationally educated applicants across three roles — nursing associates, midwives and nurses — and IELTS Academic is one way to satisfy it, since the General Training paper is not read here. Every one of the four skills is measured against its own line: Speaking, Reading and Listening at 7.0, Writing at 6.5, alongside a 7.0 overall. That structure is deliberate, because the regulator wants evidence of clinical-grade English in each domain, so an outstanding average earns nothing while one module falls short. Clear each floor in a single attempt, or assemble the marks across two dates under the rule set out below.
The Occupational English Test (OET) is the healthcare-specific alternative the NMC treats as equivalent; its papers are graded by sub-test rather than on the nine-band scale. These thresholds are fixed by NMC policy and revisited from time to time, so treat the shape of the requirement as settled but check the live figures on the official NMC English-language pages before you book a date.

The two-sittings concession
A single test date does not have to carry every skill on its own. Where one sitting leaves a module short, the NMC will read two Test Report Forms together, letting a targeted re-take lift the weak skill while the marks you already secured stay put. The catch is that the qualifying conditions are cumulative — miss any one of them and the two results stay separate.
Both attempts have to be the same qualification — two Academic IELTS dates, or two OET dates, never one of each — taken no more than six months apart, with every skill attempted on each occasion and nothing dropping beneath 6.5 (grade C+ for OET) on either. Read together, the two results must show each skill hitting its target at least once. Every condition is laid out in the table below.

IELTS, OET, or no test at all
For registration the NMC weighs IELTS Academic and OET as equals, so the decision turns on where you are strongest: OET frames every task inside the wards, charts and patient exchanges a nurse works with daily, whereas IELTS Academic is easier to book, runs in more test centres, and comes with a far deeper pool of preparation material. Either way, the per-skill floors and the two-date concession behave identically.
A minority of applicants clear the bar without any language test. The NMC may accept other proof — for instance a nursing or midwifery qualification delivered and assessed wholly in English, or current registration and recent practice in a country where English is the majority language — each with its own strings attached. Eligibility for that exemption is the NMC's call, so read its current guidance before assuming a test is unavoidable.

Practising for the computer-delivered test
UK test centres almost all run computer-delivered IELTS, and its on-screen behaviour — Listening audio that plays once with a brief review window, click-to-highlight passages, and a typed Writing box with a running word count — is precisely what CD IELTS Prep mirrors. Rehearsing full timed Academic mocks in that same environment takes the format off the table on exam day, leaving only the English to manage.
Writing is the module NMC candidates most often need to push up — the reason it carries the gentler 6.5 line is that it is the hardest skill to lift, and it is the usual trigger for a second sitting. Our samples library sets one prompt answered at band 6.5, 7.5 and 9 side by side with the differences annotated, and the writing checker returns a structured four-criterion practice estimate on whatever you write, so every session closes with something specific to work on.

NMC English-language minimums by skill
The NMC judges IELTS Academic one skill at a time, not on an average — each module has to clear its own line in a single sitting, or across two under the concession that follows. OET stands in as the accepted alternative, marked by sub-test.
| Skill | IELTS Academic minimum | OET equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 | Grade B |
| Reading | 7.0 | Grade B |
| Writing | 6.5 | Grade C+ (the writing concession) |
| Speaking | 7.0 | Grade B |
| Overall | 7.0 | No overall grade — each sub-test stands alone |
The Writing floor sits half a band below the others by long-standing concession; the other three skills and the overall are 7.0. OET is graded per sub-test with no overall score. These minimums are set by NMC policy and reviewed periodically — confirm the current figures on the official NMC English-language pages before you book.
Combining two test sittings — the concession
When no single date clears every module, the NMC will read two together — but only where all of the following hold at once.
| Condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Same test type | Both sittings are IELTS Academic, or both OET — you cannot mix IELTS with OET. |
| Within six months | The two sittings are taken no more than six months apart. |
| No skill below the floor | No score below 6.5 in any skill in either sitting (OET: no sub-test below grade C+). |
| Every skill reached once | Across the two sittings, each skill meets its minimum in at least one — 7.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking, 6.5 in Writing. |
| All four skills each time | You sit all four skills in each of the two tests, not single skills in isolation. |
The concession lets a strong second attempt rescue one weak skill without re-clearing everything at once — but the six-month window and the 6.5 (grade C+) floor in every skill are firm. Verify the current combining rules on the NMC site, as policy is reviewed from time to time.

Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score does the NMC require to register as a nurse?
IELTS Academic, marked skill by skill: 7.0 for Speaking, Reading and Listening, a 6.5 minimum for Writing, and 7.0 as the overall figure. Because each module is judged on its own, a strong overall will not offset a weak one — every skill has to clear its line. Verify the live requirement on the official NMC English-language pages, since the policy is reviewed periodically.
Does the NMC accept OET instead of IELTS?
Yes. OET, graded by sub-test, is accepted on equal footing — at least a B in the Speaking, Reading and Listening papers, with a C+ in the Writing paper that matches the 6.5 IELTS floor. Since the NMC treats the two tests as interchangeable for registration, pick whichever plays to your strengths.
Can I combine scores from two IELTS sittings for the NMC?
Yes — this is the two-sittings concession. The dates must use the same test (two Academic IELTS), fall within six months of each other, cover all four skills each time, and show nothing below 6.5 on either occasion. Read together, each skill must reach its target at least once: 7.0 for Speaking, Reading and Listening and 6.5 for Writing.
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for the NMC?
Academic. General Training is not accepted for NMC registration, so book the Academic module from the start. Listening and Speaking are identical across both versions, but the Reading and Writing Task 1 papers differ — prepare on Academic material, not the General Training equivalents.
Can I register with the NMC without sitting IELTS?
Sometimes. Instead of a test result the NMC may accept alternative evidence — for instance a qualification taught and examined entirely in English, or recent registration and practice in a majority English-speaking country — subject to its own conditions. Whether you meet the exemption is decided by the NMC, so confirm the current guidance before assuming a test is compulsory.
How recent does my IELTS result have to be for the NMC?
The NMC wants recent evidence — an IELTS Test Report Form is usually regarded as valid for two years, and your English is assessed at the moment you apply. Because these validity windows are set by policy, check the live rule on the NMC site rather than trusting a figure quoted elsewhere.
