What Sentence Completion looks like on screen
Each question is a sentence with a gap, and you type the missing words as you listen. The sentences sum up points from the recording, so the words around the gap are often not the ones the speaker uses. The instruction sets the word limit.
Where you will meet it
Sentence completion can appear in any part. The sentences follow the order of the recording.
A routine for doing a set against the clock
Listening sets its own pace: the recording plays once, and there is time to read the questions before each part. The routine is about where your eyes and attention go:
- In the reading time, read each sentence to the end, so you know what the whole sentence claims.
- Decide what the gap needs — a noun, a number, a plural — from the words either side.
- Listen for the idea of the sentence; the answer is a word you hear, but the words around it may be reworded.
- Type the answer as soon as you hear it and move straight to the next sentence.
- In the checking time, read each completed sentence for grammar and spelling.
