IELTS One Skill Retake in Australia: rules, cost and who accepts it

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit exactly one module — Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking — within 60 days of your original computer-delivered test, for AUD $310 instead of the full AUD $490 fee. The Department of Home Affairs accepts it for visa purposes, and Australian and New Zealand universities accept it universally.

The traps to check before you book
Acceptance is broad in Australia but not universal elsewhere. Canada's IRCC does not accept One Skill Retake results for Express Entry — a full retest is required there. Professional bodies also set their own rules: AHPRA's standard is written around sittings, so nurses should read the current English standard before relying on a retake. And the subclass 485 visa carries its own timing trap: the English test must have been taken within one year before applying, versus three years for most skilled visas.

This points table is why One Skill Retake exists commercially: a profile of 8.5 / 8.5 / 8.5 / 7.5 is only Proficient English, because your level is set by your lowest component. Lifting that single 7.5 to 8.0 is worth ten points — often the difference between an invitation and another year of waiting — and a one-module retake is the cheapest legitimate way to attempt it.

Can I retake more than one module with One Skill Retake?
No — one module, once, within 60 days of the original test. Two weak modules mean a full retake is the honest option.
Does Canada accept One Skill Retake?
No. IRCC requires a complete test for Express Entry; OSR is currently accepted only in the narrow Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot context.
Is paper-based IELTS still available in Australia?
No. Paper-based IELTS was discontinued in Australia after 28 June 2026 — all IELTS testing there is now computer-delivered, which also means every test is OSR-eligible.
How long is my result valid for a 485 visa?
The subclass 485 requires the English test to have been taken within one year before applying — much shorter than the three-year window most skilled visas use. Time your test, and any retake, against that clock.
