What do you usually do in your free time?
Mostly I cook. After a long day at work, making a proper meal from scratch helps me switch off, and at weekends I'll often try out a new recipe. Apart from that, I go for long walks, usually along the river near my flat, just to clear my head.
How much free time do you have these days?
Not as much as I'd like, to be honest. I work fairly long hours during the week, so my evenings are quite short. Weekends are a different story, though, and I try hard not to fill them up with chores and errands.
Is there a hobby you've kept up for a long time?
I'd say cooking's the one I've stuck with. I got into it when I moved out and suddenly had to feed myself, and over the years it's grown from a necessity into something I genuinely look forward to. I'm still no chef, though.
Did you have any hobbies when you were a child?
Yes, I was really into drawing. I'd spend hours at the kitchen table sketching animals and cartoon characters. I gave it up when exams took over at secondary school, which I slightly regret, because I was reasonably good at it.
Do you prefer spending your free time alone or with other people?
It depends on the activity. Cooking's more fun when I've got friends round to eat what I've made, but walking is something I'd rather do on my own. It's about the only time in the day when nobody needs anything from me.
Is there a hobby you'd like to take up in the future?
I'd love to try pottery. A friend of mine goes to an evening class and comes home with these slightly wonky bowls, and it looks incredibly satisfying. It'd also tie in nicely with the cooking, since I could serve food in something I'd made myself.
Do you think hobbies are important for adults?
Definitely. Adults tend to get caught up in work and responsibilities, and a hobby gives you something that's just for you, with no pressure to be productive. I think it's good for your mental health, too, because it gets you away from screens for a while.
