Is there a park near where you live?
Yes, luckily there's quite a big one about five minutes from my flat. It's got a lake in the middle and a long path round the edge, which is popular with runners. It's not particularly beautiful, but it's a nice bit of green in an otherwise very built-up area.
How often do you go there?
Most days, actually, even if it's only for a quick walk after work. It's become part of my routine, a way of switching off after a day staring at a screen. In the summer I'll take a book and sit by the lake for an hour or so at weekends.
What do people usually do in parks where you live?
All sorts of things. Early in the morning it's mainly joggers and older people doing exercises together, and at lunchtime office workers come out to eat their sandwiches. At weekends it's packed with families having picnics and kids feeding the ducks, so it's much livelier.
Did you play in parks a lot when you were a child?
All the time. There was a small park with a playground at the end of our road, and my friends and I practically lived there during the school holidays. We'd climb trees, invent games and only come home when it started getting dark. Looking back, it was a really carefree way to grow up.
Do you prefer spending time in the countryside or in the city?
For a short break, the countryside, without a doubt. I love the quiet and the fresh air, and it's the only place where I really feel I can breathe. But I don't think I could live there permanently. I'd miss the convenience of the city too much, especially being able to get everywhere without a car.
Do you think cities need more green spaces?
Yes, definitely. Green spaces aren't just nice to look at; they give people somewhere to exercise and cool down in the summer, and they're good for mental health. When developers build a new housing estate, I think a decent-sized park should be a requirement, not an afterthought.
Would you ever go camping?
Yes, I'd like to give it another go. I went once with some friends when I was a student, and it rained the entire weekend, so it wasn't the best introduction. Next time I'd pick somewhere by a lake in the mountains, and I'd definitely check the forecast first.
