What kind of clothes do you usually wear?
Pretty casual outside work: jeans, a plain T-shirt and trainers. I care much more about comfort than about looking stylish. If it's a special occasion, I'll make an effort and dress up a bit, but on an ordinary day I just want something I can move around in easily.
Do you have to dress smartly for work?
Not really. My office has a smart-casual dress code, so a shirt and chinos are fine, and nobody wears a tie unless they're meeting clients. I find that a good compromise: I look presentable, but I'm not uncomfortable sitting at a desk for eight hours.
Did you wear a uniform at school?
Yes, all the way through school. It was a navy blazer and grey trousers, and I hated it at the time because it was so scratchy. Looking back, though, I can see the point. Nobody was judged on what they wore, and getting ready in the morning took about two minutes.
Do you follow fashion trends?
Not closely, no. Trends change so quickly now that by the time I've noticed something, it's already gone out of fashion. I'd rather stick to a few classic pieces that won't look dated in a year's time. I do notice what people around me are wearing, but I don't feel any pressure to keep up.
Do you prefer buying clothes online or in shops?
In shops, for most things. Sizes vary so much between brands that I really need to try things on before I buy them. I'll order online if it's something simple, like socks, but returning clothes that don't fit is such a hassle that it usually isn't worth it.
Has your taste in clothes changed since you were a teenager?
Quite a lot, yes. Back then I wore whatever my friends were wearing, including some bright colours I'd be embarrassed to be seen in now. These days I go for more muted colours and simpler cuts. I suppose I've just worked out what suits me.
Would you ever spend a lot of money on a single item of clothing?
For the right thing, yes. I bought a really good winter coat a couple of years ago, and although it cost a fortune, I've worn it so often that it's more than paid for itself. I'd never spend that much on something trendy, though. For me it has to be practical and built to last.
