How many hours do you usually sleep?
Around seven hours on a weeknight, which seems to be about right for me. If I get much less than that, I really feel it the next day: I'm slower at work and a bit short-tempered. At weekends I'll often sleep in for an extra hour or two to make up for it.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A night owl, definitely, which is unfortunate, because my job starts at eight. My brain seems to wake up at about ten in the evening, and that's when I'm at my most creative. So there's a constant battle between what my body wants and what my alarm clock says.
Do you ever have a nap during the day?
Hardly ever. I've tried, but if I sleep for more than twenty minutes in the afternoon, I wake up groggy and then struggle to drop off at night. The only exception is after a long journey, when I'll occasionally allow myself a short nap on the sofa.
Did you go to bed early when you were a child?
Yes, my parents were quite strict about it. Lights out was at half past eight, even in the summer when it was still light outside, which felt terribly unfair at the time. I used to read under the covers with a torch, so I suppose the night-owl habit started early.
What do you do if you can't get to sleep?
I try not to reach for my phone, because that just wakes me up more. Instead I'll get up, make a cup of herbal tea and read something fairly dull for twenty minutes. Lying there staring at the ceiling never works for me; the harder I try to sleep, the more awake I feel.
Do you think most people get enough sleep these days?
Probably not. Lots of people I know work long hours and then stay up late because that's the only free time they get. On top of that, most of us have a screen in front of our faces until the moment we turn the light off, which can't be good for sleep quality.
Would you like to change anything about your sleeping habits?
Yes, I'd like to have a more regular routine. At the moment I go to bed at completely different times depending on the day, and I know that throws my body clock out of sync. If I could stick to the same bedtime every night, I think I'd wake up feeling far more refreshed.
