How do you usually get around?
Mostly by train. There's a station about ten minutes' walk from my flat, and it takes me straight into the centre. At weekends I tend to cycle instead, partly for the exercise and partly because it's nice not to be squeezed into a packed carriage.
How long does it take you to get to work?
About forty minutes door to door, which isn't too bad. The train itself only takes twenty, but there's the walk at either end. I actually don't mind the commute, because it's the one part of the day when I can read without interruptions, as long as I get a seat.
Is public transport good where you live?
It's reasonably good, although it could be more reliable. The trains are frequent during the rush hour, but the buses are a different story. They're often delayed because they get stuck in the same traffic as everyone else, so I only use them when there's no alternative.
Did you walk or cycle to school when you were a child?
I walked, mostly. My primary school was just a few streets away, so my friends and I would walk there together, which gave us a real sense of independence. When I moved up to secondary school, I started cycling, and I've been keen on it ever since.
Do you prefer travelling by bus or by train?
Definitely the train. It's faster, it runs on a timetable you can trust, and there's more room to stretch your legs. Buses do have one advantage, which is that they drop you closer to your front door, but for anything longer than a few stops, I'd pick the train every time.
Would you like to own a car in the future?
Maybe one day, if I have children, but not at the moment. Living in the city, a car would be more of a burden than a benefit, what with the cost of parking and insurance. I do have a driving licence, though, so I occasionally hire one for trips to the countryside.
What would you change about transport in your area?
The first thing I'd do is build proper cycle lanes. At the moment cyclists have to share the road with lorries, which puts a lot of people off. I'd also like the buses to have their own lanes, so they're not stuck in the same traffic jams as private cars.
