IELTS preparation for the UAE
The United Arab Emirates draws students to international branch campuses and professionals to a tightly regulated jobs market, and IELTS turns up in both — but no single authority owns the requirement. Universities, the Dubai school regulator KHDA, employers and professional-licensing bodies each set their own English evidence, so the first step is working out who is actually asking.

Which IELTS do you need for the UAE?
For university and branch-campus study — undergraduate, postgraduate or a foundation programme — institutions ask for IELTS Academic, the variant built around academic reading and writing. Employment and professional routes are less uniform: some employers and licensing bodies accept either Academic or General Training, and many name Academic specifically, so the route decides the paper. Listening and Speaking are identical across both variants; Reading and Writing Task 1 differ, so practise the one your route requires.
The UAE has no single English-language authority. A university, a federal or emirate-level regulator, an employer or a professional-licensing body may each set the requirement, and the number is theirs to change. Confirm the current minimum with the specific institution or authority before you book — the stable fact is which variant applies, not the score.

KHDA teaching licences, employers and registration
In Dubai, private-school teachers are licensed through the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), and English-language evidence — commonly IELTS Academic where a test is asked for — can form part of the professional-licensing picture. Requirements differ by role and by emirate, and other regulators licence other professions, so the licence rules themselves, not IELTS in isolation, are the thing to read first.
Skilled employment and professional registration follow the same logic. Health-sector roles, for instance, are licensed by authorities such as the DHA in Dubai, the DoH in Abu Dhabi and MOHAP federally, each of which publishes its own English-evidence rules. Where IELTS is accepted it is usually Academic, and the accepted score and validity window are set by that authority — verify them at source rather than assuming a national standard exists.

Practising for the computer-delivered format
Computer-delivered IELTS is offered widely at UAE test centres, and its interface — one-play Listening audio with a short review window, on-screen highlighting, and typed Writing with a live word count — is exactly what CD IELTS Prep reproduces. Sitting full timed mocks in the same interface removes the software as a variable on test day, so the exam tests your English rather than your familiarity with the screen.
Every mock scores Listening and Reading instantly against official-style band conversion, and the writing checker returns a structured four-criterion practice estimate. Each sitting therefore ends with numbers you can act on and a per-question-type breakdown that tells you exactly what the next session should target.

English evidence by UAE route
The UAE sets no single national requirement — each route's variant and minimum are owned by a different body. This is the stable structure; verify the live score with the authority named.
| Route | Usual IELTS variant | Who sets the requirement |
|---|---|---|
| University / branch-campus study | Academic | The institution (accredited via the CAA, or an emirate regulator such as ADEK or KHDA) |
| Dubai school teaching licence | Academic, where English evidence is asked | KHDA — the Dubai education regulator |
| Skilled or professional employment | Academic or General Training, per employer | The employer, or the profession's licensing body |
| Health-professional registration | Academic, commonly | The health authority (DHA, DoH or MOHAP) |
Many campuses sit in academic free zones (such as Dubai International Academic City) and set their own entry score, and a waiver may apply after English-medium study. None of these bodies shares a fixed IELTS minimum, and results carry a validity window — always confirm both on the official page for your specific route.

Frequently asked questions
Which IELTS do I need for the UAE — Academic or General Training?
For university and branch-campus study it is IELTS Academic. Employment and professional-licensing routes vary: some accept either variant, many specify Academic. Since Listening and Speaking are identical across both, confirm which paper your route needs, then practise the matching Reading and Writing.
What English test does a Dubai KHDA teaching licence require?
Where English evidence is asked for, KHDA-related professional licensing commonly points to IELTS Academic, but the exact requirement depends on the role and can change. Read KHDA's current licensing rules for your position rather than relying on a fixed number.
Do UAE universities and branch campuses set their own IELTS score?
Yes. Institutions — including international branch campuses in the academic free zones — set their own entry minimums within the accreditation framework. Check the score on the specific programme page before booking, and see whether a waiver applies if you studied in English.
Is IELTS required to work in the UAE?
There is no universal rule. Whether IELTS is needed, and at what score, depends on the employer and, for licensed professions, the relevant authority — health regulators such as DHA, DoH and MOHAP each publish their own English-evidence requirements. Verify at source for your role.
Can I practise the exact computer-delivered format here?
Yes. Every mock reproduces the computer-delivered interface used at UAE test centres: one-play Listening audio with a review window, timed sections, on-screen highlighting, and typed answers with a live word count.
How is Writing scored on this site?
The writing checker returns a structured practice estimate across the four official criteria — Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy — clearly labelled as a practice estimate, not an examiner score.
