IELTS preparation for Ireland
Ireland is the English-speaking gateway to the EU, and its universities teach and examine in English — which puts IELTS Academic at the centre of most study routes. Because each Irish institution and each professional regulator sets its own minimum band, preparation starts with knowing which variant your route needs and whose number you actually have to hit.

Which IELTS do you need for Ireland?
Ireland's universities and colleges teach and examine in English, so study admission runs on IELTS Academic — for undergraduate, postgraduate and most foundation or pathway programmes. The same is true of professional registration: regulators such as the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and the Medical Council read Academic when they assess overseas-trained applicants.
Work and migration are different. Employment permits — the Critical Skills Employment Permit and the General Employment Permit — are decided on your job, skills and salary, and the permit itself sets no IELTS band. Where English still has to be evidenced, whether by an employer, a regulator or the immigration process, confirm which variant that specific body accepts before you book, because Academic and General Training differ in Reading and Writing Task 1.

Who sets the band — and where to check it
There is no national IELTS minimum for Ireland. Each institution, and often each individual course, sets its own overall requirement, frequently with a floor on particular modules — Writing and Speaking are the usual ones for teaching, nursing and clinical programmes. Because the number lives on the course page rather than in any central rule, the requirement that matters is your programme's, not the country's; read the specific course listing, not a general admissions page.
For English-language and foundation courses, check that the provider appears on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) — the official list of courses a non-EEA student can come to Ireland to study — since that, not the test alone, is what makes the study route valid.
The immigration side is run by Immigration Service Delivery (ISD, formerly INIS). For study it generally relies on your institution's offer and English evidence rather than demanding a separate IELTS band, and permission to remain is registered as an Irish Residence Permit (IRP). Visa and registration rules change, so verify the current requirements for your nationality and route on the official ISD pages before booking anything.

Practising for the computer-delivered format
Irish test centres offer computer-delivered IELTS, and its interface — one-play Listening audio with a short review window, on-screen highlighting, and typed Writing with a live word count — is exactly what CD IELTS Prep reproduces. Sitting full timed mocks in the same software removes the format as a variable on test day, leaving only the English.
Because Irish courses so often set per-module floors, preparation should be targeted per module too. The reports page breaks your accuracy down by question type within each skill, so instead of re-sitting whole papers you can see exactly where the marks leak — matching headings in Reading, say, or Task 1 in Writing — and drill that. Listening and Speaking are identical across Academic and General Training, so that practice transfers whichever paper your route turns out to need.

Which IELTS each Irish route reads
Ireland has no single national IELTS minimum — the requirement is set by whoever is reading your English. This is the stable structure; verify your exact number on the source each row names.
| Route | Who sets it | Which IELTS applies |
|---|---|---|
| University & college admission | Each institution, per course | Academic — overall band, often with per-module floors |
| English-language & foundation programmes | The provider (ILEP-listed course) | Academic in most cases — confirm with the provider |
| Nursing registration (NMBI) | The regulator | Academic |
| Doctor registration (Medical Council) | The regulator | Academic |
| Employment permits — Critical Skills / General | DETE; the permit sets no IELTS band | English asked by the employer or regulator, not the permit |
| Study visa & residence permit (IRP) | Immigration Service Delivery (ISD, formerly INIS) | Accepts the institution's English proof — no separate IELTS band |
Academic is the safe default for anything academic or clinical. The employment-permit route sets no IELTS band of its own, so any English requirement there comes from your employer, a regulator or the immigration process — confirm which variant they accept, and check current study-visa rules on the official ISD pages, before booking.

Questions candidates ask
Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for Ireland?
Academic, for university admission and for professional registration such as nursing or medicine. Employment permits set no fixed IELTS band, so if a work or immigration process asks for English evidence, confirm which variant that specific body accepts before booking — the two differ in Reading and Writing Task 1.
What IELTS band do Irish universities require?
There is no national standard. Each institution, and often each course, sets its own overall minimum, frequently with a floor on individual modules. Requirements sit within a broad band range that varies by level and subject, so confirm the exact number on the specific course page rather than a general admissions page.
Is IELTS required for a Critical Skills or General Employment Permit?
The employment permit itself does not set an IELTS band — it is decided on your job, skills and salary. English may still be read by your employer, a professional regulator, or the immigration process, so check what your particular route asks for and which variant it accepts.
Does the Irish study visa have its own IELTS minimum?
Generally no. Immigration Service Delivery (ISD, formerly INIS) usually relies on the offer and English evidence from your ILEP-listed institution rather than demanding a separate IELTS band. Rules vary by nationality and change over time, so verify the current study-visa requirements on the official ISD pages.
Can I practise the exact computer-delivered format here?
Yes. Every mock reproduces the computer-delivered interface used at Irish test centres: one-play Listening audio with a review window, timed sections with server-side clocks, on-screen highlighting, and typed answers.
How is Writing scored here?
The writing checker returns a structured practice estimate across the four official criteria — Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy — clearly labelled as a practice estimate, not an examiner score.
