IELTS preparation for the Netherlands
The Netherlands runs one of Europe's largest offerings of English-taught degrees, and for international applicants that makes IELTS Academic the usual key to the door. There is no single national cut-off, though — every university, and often every programme within it, sets its own minimum band, so preparation begins with reading the requirement on the exact page you are applying to.

Which IELTS do Dutch universities need?
English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes admit international applicants on IELTS Academic — the academic module, not General Training — because a degree taught in English demands the reading and report-writing the Academic papers test. Listening and Speaking are shared with General Training; Reading and Writing Task 1 are not, so practise the Academic versions.
There is no national minimum band. Each research university and university of applied sciences publishes its own requirement per programme, and a faculty can set a higher bar than the institution's general floor. Confirm the figure on the specific programme page before you book — the general admissions page is not always the one that binds your application.

No single cut-off — how the requirement is set
Dutch programmes state their English requirement as a minimum overall band, very often with a floor on individual modules and Writing in particular. Two courses at the same university can ask for different bands, and a subject's master's can differ from its bachelor's — so treat each programme's own page as the source of truth.
Most programmes accept more than one proof of English: IELTS Academic alongside TOEFL iBT, and frequently Cambridge English C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. If you already hold one of these, the page usually states the equivalent it will take; if you hold none, IELTS Academic is the most widely recognised route.
Prior study in English can sometimes remove the requirement altogether — a recognised degree taught in English, or schooling in an English-speaking system — but any waiver is at the institution's discretion, so confirm it with the admissions office rather than assuming it applies.

Where study candidates lose marks
For a study-bound profile the Academic Reading and Writing papers are where bands most often fall short of a programme's floor. The reports page breaks accuracy down by question type, so rather than re-sitting whole mocks you can see that — say — matching-headings or True/False/Not Given questions are where the marks leak, and drill exactly those.
Writing is the module Netherlands-bound applicants most often retake. The samples library shows the same task answered at band 6.5, 7.5 and 9 with the differences annotated, and the writing checker returns a four-criterion practice estimate on your own answers — labelled a practice estimate, never an examiner score.

Practising the computer-delivered format
IELTS is offered computer-delivered at test centres, and its on-screen behaviour — audio that plays once, on-screen highlighting, typed Writing with a live word count, and no separate answer-transfer time in Listening — is exactly what these mocks reproduce. Sitting full timed papers in the same interface removes the software as a variable.
That leaves test day to test your English rather than your ability to learn a new tool under a clock. Each Listening and Reading mock scores instantly against an official-style band conversion, so every sitting ends with a number you can act on instead of a wait.

Which IELTS each Dutch study route needs
The variant is stable even where the band is not — degree admission is assessed on IELTS Academic across the board. The required score is set by the institution, so verify it on the programme page you are applying to.
| Study route | IELTS variant | Who sets the minimum band |
|---|---|---|
| English-taught bachelor's degree | Academic | The university / programme page |
| English-taught master's degree | Academic | The faculty or programme |
| Foundation or pathway year | Academic | The pathway provider |
| Pre-master's / bridging programme | Academic | The host university |
| Doctoral position taken as an employee | Academic, where the group requires a test | The research group or graduate school |
Both research universities (WO) and universities of applied sciences (HBO) offer English-taught degrees, and each sets its requirement per programme — two courses at the same institution can differ. General Training is for work and migration routes, not degree study.
English-language evidence Dutch programmes accept
Most English-taught programmes list more than one acceptable proof of English. Which you submit is your choice; the band or equivalent each requires is set per programme.
| Evidence | What it is | Where the requirement lives |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | The academic module of IELTS | Programme page — overall band, often a per-module floor |
| TOEFL iBT | ETS's internet-based English test | The same page, usually beside an IELTS equivalent |
| Cambridge English (C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency) | Cambridge's higher-level certificates | Accepted by many, though not all, programmes |
| Prior English-medium study | A recognised degree or schooling taught in English | Waived at the institution's discretion |
No figure here is a cut-off — the accepted evidence is stable, but the band, the TOEFL equivalent and the waiver terms are each set by the programme, so read its own admissions page before you book a test.

Questions candidates ask
Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for a Dutch university?
Academic. English-taught bachelor's and master's admission is assessed on IELTS Academic; General Training is for work and migration routes, not degree study. Listening and Speaking are shared between the two, but Reading and Writing differ, so practise the Academic papers.
Is there a single IELTS score for studying in the Netherlands?
No. There is no national minimum — every university, and often every programme, sets its own required band, sometimes with a floor on individual modules. Confirm the figure on the specific programme page before booking a test.
Do Dutch universities accept IELTS as well as TOEFL?
Yes. Most English-taught programmes accept IELTS Academic alongside TOEFL iBT, and many also accept Cambridge English C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. The programme page lists which proofs it takes and the score each one requires.
Can my English requirement be waived?
Sometimes. Applicants with a recognised degree taught in English, or prior schooling in an English-speaking system, may have the test waived — but this is at the institution's discretion, so check with the admissions office rather than assuming it applies.
Do universities of applied sciences ask for the same band as research universities?
Not necessarily. Both HBO universities of applied sciences and WO research universities offer English-taught programmes, and each sets its requirement per course — so compare the exact programme you are applying to, not the type of institution.
Does the practice here match the real computer-delivered test?
Yes. Every mock reproduces the computer-delivered interface: one-play Listening audio with a review window, timed sections with on-screen clocks, highlighting, and typed answers with a live word count.
