IELTS requirements for a master's degree
A taught master's degree in English almost always asks for IELTS Academic, and the band sits higher than undergraduate entry because postgraduate study is reading- and writing-heavy from the first week. Most programmes cluster around an overall 6.5 to 7.0 with no single skill below 6.0 to 6.5, but the exact figure is set by the university and the department, not by IELTS. This page lays out the stable structure so you know what to verify on your offer letter.

Which IELTS do you need for a master's?
Postgraduate admission uses IELTS Academic, not General Training. The two share identical Listening and Speaking papers, but Academic Reading uses university-style texts and Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, graph or process — the kind of source-based writing a master's actually demands. Booking General Training by mistake means your result cannot be used for study.
If your master's is in the UK, note the UKVI question: for degree-level study at a licensed university, standard IELTS Academic is normally accepted, while the IELTS for UKVI (SELT) version is generally required only below degree level or at some pathway and pre-sessional providers. The offer letter tells you which one to book — confirm it before you pay a test fee.

The band a postgraduate course asks for
Two numbers govern a study requirement: an overall band and a minimum in each of the four skills. Your overall band is the mean of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, rounded to the nearest half-band — so a strong average can still hide a weak skill. A typical taught master's asks for an overall 6.5 to 7.0 with nothing below 6.0 to 6.5, and many courses raise the Writing floor specifically, because essays and the dissertation lean on it.
The programme sets these figures, and they vary by university, by department and sometimes by intake. Treat any range you read online — including the one on this page — as a guide to what is common, and take the binding number from the offer letter and the university's own admissions page.

Why some subjects ask for more
Language-critical disciplines tend to sit at the top of the range. Law, journalism, translation and interpreting, teacher training, medicine and other clinical courses often ask for an overall 7.0 to 7.5, sometimes with 7.0 in every skill, because the subject is inseparable from precise English or because a professional or licensing body sets its own bar. Quantitative fields such as engineering, computing and mathematics sometimes accept the lower end of the band range.
These are tendencies, not rules. A department can pitch its requirement anywhere it judges necessary for the course, so use the subject table below to anticipate roughly where you will land, then confirm the actual band with the university.

Meeting the requirement
The most common way applicants fall short is a single low skill. Because most offers state a per-skill floor, one skill below it fails the whole English condition even when your overall band is comfortably above the minimum — so target your weakest module, not your average. IELTS results are valid for two years from the test date, and universities check that validity at enrolment, not only at application.
If you miss the band, you usually have options: resit the full test, take a One Skill Retake where the test centre offers it, or complete an approved pre-sessional English course, which many universities accept in place of a higher IELTS score under a conditional offer. Full timed practice in the computer-delivered interface removes the format as a variable so the only thing between you and the band is the English.

Typical IELTS band by subject area
A qualitative guide to where taught master's programmes tend to pitch their requirement — useful for planning, but never a substitute for the number on your offer.
| Subject area | Typical overall band | Common per-skill floor | Why it tends to sit here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Law, journalism, translation & interpreting | 7.0–7.5 | 7.0 in each skill | Precise reading and writing are the discipline itself |
| Teacher training & education | 7.0 | 6.5–7.0, speaking often 7.0 | Classroom communication and, in places, a teaching-registration body |
| Medicine, nursing & clinical courses | 7.0 | 7.0, often in every skill | Patient safety; a professional regulator may set a higher bar |
| Humanities & social sciences | 6.5–7.0 | 6.0–6.5 | Essay- and reading-led assessment |
| Business & management (MBA, MSc) | 6.5–7.0 | 6.0–6.5 | Case writing, group work and presentations |
| Engineering, computing & sciences | 6.5 | 6.0 | More quantitative; some departments accept the lower end |
| Art, design & performance | 6.5 | 6.0 | Portfolio-led, but written theory is still assessed |
Tendencies across taught master's programmes, not a rule — the university and department set the actual figure, and a professional or licensing body may impose a higher one. Always read the band stated on your offer letter and verify it on the university's own admissions page.
How a postgraduate English condition is usually written
The parts of a typical offer wording, what each means, and the trap attached to it.
| What the offer states | What it means | The trap |
|---|---|---|
| Overall band, e.g. 6.5 | The mean of your four skills, rounded to the nearest half-band | Clearing the overall does not clear a low sub-score |
| No skill below, e.g. 6.0 | A floor every one of the four skills must reach | One skill under the floor fails the whole condition |
| A higher band in one skill, e.g. Writing 6.5 | A raised floor on the skill the course leans on | Often the sub-score applicants miss last |
| Pre-sessional English accepted | A short language course that can satisfy the condition instead | Has its own deadline and test rules — confirm early |
| Results within two years | IELTS is valid two years from the test date | An older certificate may be refused at enrolment |
Wording varies by university; these are the components a postgraduate English condition is usually built from. The binding version is the one on your own offer.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for a master's?
IELTS Academic. General Training is for migration and work-experience routes and cannot be used for degree admission. Academic Reading and Writing use university-style tasks, which is why postgraduate courses require it.
What IELTS score do I need for a master's degree?
Most taught master's programmes ask for an overall 6.5 to 7.0 with no individual skill below 6.0 to 6.5. Language-heavy subjects such as law, journalism and teacher training tend to ask for more. The university and department set the exact figure, so take the binding number from your offer letter.
Can a high overall band make up for one low skill?
Usually not. Most offers set a minimum in each of the four skills, and one skill below that floor fails the English condition even if your overall band is well above the minimum. Target your weakest module rather than your average.
Is standard IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI needed for a UK master's?
For degree-level study at a licensed university, standard IELTS Academic is normally accepted; the IELTS for UKVI (SELT) version is generally required only below degree level or at some pathway providers. Your offer names which one — confirm it before booking, because the wrong test wastes the fee.
How long is my IELTS result valid for admission?
IELTS results are valid for two years from the test date. Universities check that the certificate is still valid at enrolment, not only when you apply, so plan your test date with the start of the course in mind.
What if I miss the required band?
You can resit the full test, take a One Skill Retake where the test centre offers it, or complete an approved pre-sessional English course, which many universities accept under a conditional offer in place of a higher IELTS score. Confirm the accepted route with the university before you commit.
