IELTS for Australian skilled migration
Australia's skilled-migration program does not simply ask you to pass IELTS — it scores your English on a three-tier ladder and turns it into points on the 189, 190 and 491 visas. Competent, Proficient and Superior English each carry a fixed number of points, and the level you reach is set by your weakest of the four component bands, not your average. This page maps the ladder so you can see which band earns which points, and defers every live figure to the official source.

The Competent–Proficient–Superior ladder
Australia does not read your IELTS as a single overall figure. The points-tested skilled visas — Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491) — sort applicants into three English levels: Competent, Proficient and Superior. Competent English is the floor that makes you eligible to apply and earns no points; Proficient and Superior each add a fixed block of points to your total.
Crucially, your level is decided by your lowest of the four component bands, not your average or your overall band. A profile that is strong in three skills and half a band short in the fourth is capped at the lower level — which is why the ladder rewards even preparation across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking rather than a high average pulled up by one strong skill.

Academic or General Training — and the skills-assessment trap
For the points test itself, IELTS Academic and General Training earn identical English points; the Department of Home Affairs treats the two variants equally when awarding Competent, Proficient or Superior. So for the migration points alone, either variant clears the bar.
The catch is the skills assessment most skilled visas require first. Assessing authorities and professional bodies — for nurses, teachers, engineers and accountants among others — often specify IELTS Academic and can set their own, sometimes higher, band in each skill. Confirm what your assessing authority accepts before you book, because a General Training result that satisfies the points test may not satisfy the assessor.

Why one weak module caps your points
Because the ladder reads your lowest component, the fastest way to climb it is usually to lift a single skill, not to raise your average. Someone sitting on 7.5 / 7.5 / 7.5 / 6.5 is only Competent English despite an excellent profile — the lone 6.5 costs the ten Proficient points until it reaches 7.0 in that skill.
That makes targeted practice more valuable than repeated full mocks. The reports here break each attempt down by skill and question type, so you can see which module is holding your level down and drill exactly that — matching-headings in Reading, or note completion in Listening Part 4 — rather than re-sitting everything and hoping the weak skill drifts up.

Booking the right test and keeping it valid
IELTS in Australia is computer-delivered, and Home Affairs accepts a One Skill Retake — a single-module resit — which suits a profile that misses one tier by half a band in just one skill. Practising in the same on-screen interface removes the format as a variable, so only the language is left to prove on test day.
Skilled-migration results must be recent when you are invited, and both the points-test pass mark and the invitation-round cut-offs are set by policy and move over time. Treat those as figures to verify on the official Department of Home Affairs pages rather than numbers to memorise — this page fixes the stable structure, not the live thresholds.

English levels and points on the skilled points test (189 / 190 / 491)
Your English level is set by your lowest of the four component bands, and each level carries a fixed number of points on the migration points test.
| English level | IELTS band in each skill | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Competent English | 6.0 in every skill | 0 — the minimum to be eligible |
| Proficient English | 7.0 in every skill | 10 |
| Superior English | 8.0 in every skill | 20 |
The level comes from your weakest skill, not your overall band — one 6.5 among three 8.0s is still only Competent. A partner with at least Competent English can add 5 points. Academic and General Training earn identical points here, but skills assessors often require Academic. Results must be recent when you are invited.
How English works across the three skilled subclasses
The English ladder is identical across all three points-tested visas; what differs is the nomination that 190 and 491 add on top.
| Visa subclass | English to be eligible | What lifts your total |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Independent (189) | Competent English (6.0 each) | Proficient +10 or Superior +20 English points |
| Skilled Nominated (190) | Competent English (6.0 each) | Same English points, plus +5 state-nomination points |
| Skilled Work Regional (491) | Competent English (6.0 each) | Same English points, plus +15 regional-nomination points |
The overall points you need to be invited, and each round's cut-off, are set by the Department of Home Affairs and change over time — verify the current figures on the official pages. The skills assessment is a separate requirement from the points test.

Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score do I need for Australian skilled migration?
To be eligible for a points-tested skilled visa you need at least Competent English — IELTS 6.0 in each of the four skills — which earns zero English points. IELTS 7.0 in every skill reaches Proficient English (10 points) and 8.0 in every skill reaches Superior English (20 points). The overall points you need to be invited is a separate, policy-set figure — check the current pass mark on the Department of Home Affairs pages.
Does my overall band or my lowest skill set my English level?
Your lowest of the four component bands. Home Affairs reads Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking separately and assigns your English level from the weakest one, so a single skill below the threshold caps the level no matter how strong the others are.
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for skilled migration?
For the migration points test, Academic and General Training earn identical English points. But the skills assessment most visas require first — through bodies such as ANMAC, AITSL, Engineers Australia or CPA Australia — often specifies Academic and may set a higher band. Confirm your assessing authority's rule before booking.
How many points is IELTS worth on a skilled visa?
Competent English earns 0, Proficient English 10 and Superior English 20 points, based on the band you reach in every skill. A partner with at least Competent English can add a further 5 points to your claim. These are English points only — age, qualifications, work experience and any nomination make up the rest of your total.
How long is an IELTS result valid for Australian skilled migration?
Results must be recent — currently within three years at the time you are invited to apply — but treat that window as a policy figure to confirm on the Department of Home Affairs pages rather than a fixed rule.
Can a One Skill Retake lift me to the next English level?
Yes. Home Affairs accepts the IELTS One Skill Retake, a resit of a single module, and it suits a profile that misses a tier by half a band in just one skill. Check the current retake rules and eligibility on the official pages before relying on it.
