IELTS for a Canadian study permit
A Canadian study permit has no IELTS score of its own — Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) asks for a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, and it is that institution that sets the English requirement your IELTS Academic result must meet. Since the fast-track Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, every applicant now uses the general stream, where the band you actually need is decided by your programme rather than by a visa rule. Knowing your programme's requirement — and which IELTS variant it reads — is the first real step.

Which IELTS does a Canadian study permit need?
IELTS Academic is the variant Canadian universities and colleges read for degree admission. The study permit itself does not name a test — it requires you to hold a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI), and that letter is what IRCC checks. So your real target is the institution's English requirement, met with an IELTS Academic result.
Listening and Speaking are identical across Academic and General Training; Reading and Writing Task 1 differ. Some pathway and college programmes accept General Training, but Academic is the safe default for degree study, so practise the Academic papers unless your programme tells you otherwise.

The Student Direct Stream has ended — what changed
Until 8 November 2024 many students used the Student Direct Stream (SDS), a faster processing route that required a fixed language result — IELTS 6.0 in each of the four abilities, or the CLB 7 equivalent in French. IRCC closed SDS on that date, and all study permit applications are now processed through the general stream.
The general stream sets no across-the-board IELTS minimum. That does not make English optional: a strong, recent test result supports your application, and — more to the point — it is what your programme demands for admission. The practical bar is now your institution's, not a visa rule's.

How much IELTS your programme is likely to want
Because the number comes from the institution, it varies by study level and field. Foundation and pathway programmes accept the lowest bands, often with conditional admission or an English top-up; undergraduate and postgraduate degrees ask for more; and communication-heavy or regulated programmes — nursing, teaching, medicine, law — commonly set the highest bars, with per-skill minimums on top of the overall band. The table below shows the ranges you will typically see.
Many programmes also set a minimum in each band, not just an overall score, so a strong overall with one weak skill can still fall short. Aim above the stated overall and keep every skill clear of the per-skill floor — and always confirm the exact figure on your programme's own admissions page.

Practising for the computer-delivered Academic test
Most Canada-bound candidates sit computer-delivered IELTS, and the on-screen experience — one-play Listening audio, the highlight and notes tools, typed answers with no spell-check — is exactly what our mocks reproduce. Full timed Academic mocks in the same interface remove the format as a variable, so test day tests only your English.
Each mock scores Listening and Reading instantly against the official-style band conversion, and the Writing checker returns a structured four-criterion practice estimate — so a sitting ends with numbers you can act on and a clear read on which skill is still short of your programme's bar.

Typical IELTS Academic requirement by study level
Ranges commonly seen at Canadian institutions — the study permit sets none of these; your university or college sets the exact figure. Treat this as orientation only.
| Study level | Typical overall Academic band | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation / English pathway | 5.0–5.5 | Often conditional, with an English top-up before the main programme |
| College certificate or diploma | 6.0 | Frequently a minimum in each band as well as the overall |
| Undergraduate degree | 6.0–6.5 | Commonly no individual band below 6.0 |
| Postgraduate (Master's / PhD) | 6.5–7.0 | Often a per-skill floor around 6.0–6.5 |
| Regulated / communication-heavy programmes | 7.0+ | Nursing, teaching, medicine and law set higher per-skill minimums |
Qualitative ranges only, not admission guarantees. Every institution sets and publishes its own minimum, and many require a specific band in each skill. Confirm the current figure on your programme's official admissions page before you book a test.
Where the IELTS requirement actually comes from
The study permit and your programme are two different bars. Only one of them names an IELTS number.
| Stage | Who sets the language bar | What it means for IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Study permit (IRCC, general stream) | No IRCC-set IELTS minimum | A test result is not a permit pass-mark, but a strong recent band supports the application |
| Student Direct Stream (SDS) | Closed 8 November 2024 | Its fixed 6.0-in-each-band rule (CLB 7 in French) is gone with the stream |
| Programme admission (your DLI) | Your university or college | Sets the IELTS Academic band that actually gates you — see the ranges above |
| After graduation (PGWP) | IRCC, read through CLB | A separate language check on the General Training scale — covered in our Canada guide |
IRCC confirms which documents and, where relevant, which language tests each route accepts; verify your situation on the official IRCC pages. Admission requirements are set and published by each DLI.

Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score do I need for a Canada study permit?
There is no single score set for the study permit itself. IRCC requires a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, and that institution sets the IELTS Academic band you must meet — so the number depends on your programme. Check its admissions page and note any per-skill minimums.
Do I still need IELTS 6.0 in each band for the Student Direct Stream?
No. The Student Direct Stream closed on 8 November 2024, so its fixed 6.0-per-band requirement no longer applies — the stream itself no longer exists. All applicants now use the general stream, where your programme sets the band.
Is IELTS Academic or General Training right for studying in Canada?
Universities and most colleges read IELTS Academic for degree admission; General Training is for migration and work routes. Listening and Speaking are the same in both, while Reading and Writing Task 1 differ, so practise Academic if you are heading to a degree. Confirm with the institution if you are unsure.
Is a language test mandatory for the study permit now?
In the general stream a language test is not a mandatory requirement of the study permit application itself, but in practice you need one: your institution requires it for admission, and a strong recent result strengthens the application. Treat IELTS Academic as essential even though IRCC does not fix a number.
How recent does my IELTS result have to be?
IELTS results are reported as valid for two years, and institutions typically want a result inside that window at the point of admission. Some programmes set a tighter limit, so confirm the exact requirement on your programme's admissions page.
Can I practise the exact computer-delivered format here?
Yes. Every Academic mock reproduces the computer-delivered interface — one-play Listening with a review window, server-side timers, highlighting and typed answers with no spell-check — so the software is familiar well before test day.
