IELTS for Canada Express Entry
Canada is the one destination that reads your IELTS bands as points. For skilled immigration through Express Entry it accepts IELTS General Training, converts each skill's band to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level, and awards Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points at every level — so a single half-band can move real points. This page sets out the fixed structure: which variant to sit, the per-skill minimum each program needs, and the points each CLB level earns.

Which IELTS do you need for Express Entry?
Express Entry runs three programs — the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Trades Program — and every one of them reads IELTS General Training. An Academic result cannot be converted to a CLB level for these programs, so General Training is the paper to sit for permanent residence. Listening and Speaking are identical to Academic; only Reading and Writing Task 1 differ, so practise the General Training versions of those two.
One common mix-up is worth clearing up: the Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a faster study-permit route with its own language rules, not part of Express Entry, and it plays no role in a permanent-residence application. If your goal is PR, set SDS score talk aside and focus on the CLB structure below. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) publishes which tests each program accepts — confirm your stream on the official IRCC pages before booking.

How the CRS turns your bands into points
Canadian immigration does not use band scores directly. Each of your four skill bands is first converted to a CLB level, and the Comprehensive Ranking System then awards points for the CLB level you reach in each ability — listening, reading, writing and speaking are scored separately. Because points are per ability, your weakest skill can quietly cap your profile: one skill sitting a half-band lower can land a whole CLB level lower and cost points across the board.
The points climb with each CLB level, and they differ depending on whether you apply with a spouse or common-law partner — the maximum for your first official language is 136 points without a partner and 128 with one, spread across the four abilities. Because a half-band can cross a CLB boundary, knowing exactly where those boundaries fall is as valuable as raw practice. The table below pairs each CLB level with the General Training band it needs in every skill and the CRS points it earns.
Those are the core language points. Express Entry also awards skill-transferability points for strong language combined with education or work experience, and additional points for French as a second official language — all set by fixed policy and detailed on the IRCC site. What stays constant is this per-CLB structure; the draw cut-off a given round selects at is not part of it and changes every draw.

FSW, CEC and the minimum each program needs
Each program sets a language floor you must clear to be eligible, expressed as a minimum CLB per skill with no averaging. The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires CLB 7 in all four abilities — IELTS 6.0 in every skill — and also scores language inside its own selection-factor assessment out of 100. The Canadian Experience Class varies by the TEER category of your work: CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs, CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs. The Federal Skilled Trades Program asks CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing.
Meeting the minimum only makes you eligible; the CRS score then ranks you against everyone else in the pool. Provincial Nominee Program streams set their own language rules on top of this and vary far more, so treat the federal minimums here as the baseline and verify your specific stream on the official IRCC and provincial pages. Results must be less than two years old when you apply.

Practising for the computer-delivered test
Most Canadian test centres offer computer-delivered IELTS, and the on-screen experience — one-play Listening audio with a short review window, on-screen highlighting, and typed Writing with a live word count — is exactly what CD IELTS Prep reproduces. Sitting full timed General Training mocks in the same interface removes the software as a variable on test day, leaving only the language.
Because your lowest skill sets the CLB that caps your points, preparation should be targeted per skill. The reports page breaks accuracy down by question type within each module, so instead of re-sitting whole papers you can see which skill is holding your CLB back — and drill exactly that. The IELTS-to-CLB converter then shows the level each new band would earn before you book the real test.

Language points in the CRS: CLB level, IELTS band and points per skill
The heart of Express Entry scoring — each skill's band sets a CLB level, and every CLB level earns fixed CRS points per ability. These are the set points-per-CLB values, not draw cut-offs.
| CLB level | IELTS GT per skill — L / R / W / S | CRS points per skill (with spouse) | CRS points per skill (no spouse) |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10+ | 8.5 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.5 | 32 | 34 |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 | 29 | 31 |
| CLB 8 | 7.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 | 22 | 23 |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 | 16 | 17 |
| CLB 6 | 5.5 / 5.0 / 5.5 / 5.5 | 8 | 9 |
| CLB 5 | 5.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 / 5.0 | 6 | 6 |
| CLB 4 | 4.5 / 3.5 / 4.0 / 4.0 | 6 | 6 |
Points are scored separately for each of the four abilities, so the maximum first-official-language total is 136 without a spouse (34 × 4) and 128 with one (32 × 4). Your CLB in a skill is set by that skill's band alone — the lowest skill caps the profile. Skill-transferability and French second-language points are added on top; verify the full CRS criteria on the official IRCC pages.
Minimum CLB by Express Entry program
The language floor each program needs to be eligible, per skill with no averaging. Meeting it qualifies you; the CRS then ranks the pool. Verify your stream on the official IRCC pages.
| Program | Language minimum | In IELTS GT bands (L / R / W / S) |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) | CLB 7 in all four abilities | 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 |
| Canadian Experience Class — TEER 0 or 1 jobs | CLB 7 in all four abilities | 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 |
| Canadian Experience Class — TEER 2 or 3 jobs | CLB 5 in all four abilities | 5.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 / 5.0 |
| Federal Skilled Trades (FST) | CLB 5 speaking & listening, CLB 4 reading & writing | S 5.0 · L 5.0 · R 3.5 · W 4.0 |
FSW also scores language inside its own selection-factor points assessment, separate from the CRS. Express Entry reads IELTS General Training only, and results must be less than two years old when you apply. Provincial Nominee Program streams set their own language rules and vary widely — confirm yours at source.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for Express Entry?
General Training. All three Express Entry programs — Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades — read IELTS General Training, and an Academic result cannot be converted to a CLB level for them. Listening and Speaking are identical to Academic, so only your Reading and Writing practice needs to switch to the GT versions.
How does IELTS convert to CRS points?
Each skill band is first converted to a Canadian Language Benchmark level, and the CRS then awards points for the CLB level you reach in each of the four abilities separately. The points rise with each CLB level and differ depending on whether you apply with a spouse; because scoring is per ability, your weakest skill can cap the total.
What is the minimum IELTS for Federal Skilled Worker?
The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires CLB 7 in all four abilities, which is IELTS General Training 6.0 in listening, reading, writing and speaking. That is an eligibility floor — the CRS then ranks eligible candidates. The Canadian Experience Class minimum instead depends on your job's TEER category. Confirm current criteria on the official IRCC site.
Can a single half-band really change my CRS score?
Yes. Because points are awarded by CLB level per skill, a half-band that crosses a CLB boundary in one ability moves the points for that ability — and can shift your skill-transferability points too. That is why the CLB boundaries, not just your overall band, are worth knowing before you sit.
Is the Student Direct Stream (SDS) relevant to Express Entry?
No. SDS is a faster study-permit route with its own language rules, not a permanent-residence program. It has no bearing on an Express Entry application, so if your goal is PR you can set SDS score requirements aside and focus on the CLB-to-points structure.
Can I practise the exact computer-delivered format here?
Yes. Every mock reproduces the computer-delivered interface used at Canadian test centres: one-play Listening audio with a review window, timed sections, on-screen highlighting, and typed answers — in the General Training variant Express Entry reads.
