IELTS for the Engineers Australia skills assessment
Engineers Australia is the authority that assesses engineering occupations for Australia's skilled-migration system, and its English rule is refreshingly plain: you must demonstrate Competent English. For IELTS that means a band of 6.0 in each of the four skills — with no separate overall-band hurdle, and both Academic and General Training accepted. It is a lower bar than clinical registration, so the first preparation step is simply knowing exactly what the assessment reads.

What Engineers Australia actually asks for
Engineers Australia (EA) is the assessing authority for engineering occupations, and a suitable EA skills assessment is what the Department of Home Affairs relies on for the skilled-migration visas engineers apply through. Alongside your qualification assessment, EA requires you to demonstrate Competent English — its named English-competency standard — when you lodge.
For IELTS, Competent English is a minimum of 6.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There is no separate overall-band rule: every one of the four skills must reach 6.0, so a single weak module blocks the standard even when your average looks comfortable. EA accepts both the Academic and General Training versions, and it also accepts results that include a One Skill Retake — the paper you sit is the one your wider migration plan prefers, not one the assessment dictates.

Why the bar sits lower than clinical roles
Competent English at 6.0 in every skill is deliberately an entry floor, and it is markedly lower than the bars Australia's clinical regulators set — AHPRA, for nurses and doctors, reads IELTS Academic at 7.0 in every component. Clearing EA's 6.0 gets your engineering assessment through the English gate; it does not mean 6.0 is the score to aim for.
That is because English does double duty in Australian migration. The Department of Home Affairs awards points on top of EA's minimum: Proficient English (broadly 7.0 in each skill) and Superior English (broadly 8.0 in each skill) add points to a skilled-visa profile, and your level is fixed by your lowest skill, not your average. Meeting EA at 6.0 qualifies the assessment; pushing every skill higher is a separate, points-driven decision — confirm the current point values on the official Home Affairs pages.

When you may not need an English test at all
Engineers Australia recognises exemptions from providing a test result. You usually do not need one if you graduated from an Australian institution after at least two academic years of study — around 92 weeks in a CRICOS-registered course at AQF level 6 or above — or if you are a citizen holding a valid passport from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland.
Exemptions apply only with the right documentary evidence, and assessors can still ask for further proof of your English. Because the eligibility rules and the recognised list can be updated, confirm your specific situation against Engineers Australia's current guidance before deciding to skip the test — an assumed exemption that does not hold can stall an application.

Practising for the computer-delivered test
Australian centres run IELTS on computer, and because Engineers Australia reads each skill separately, practice should be aimed skill by skill rather than at an overall average. The reports here break your accuracy down by question type within each module, so instead of re-sitting whole mocks you can see which skill is holding you below 6.0 — or below a points threshold — and drill exactly that.
Sitting full timed mocks in the same on-screen interface — one-play Listening audio with a review window, on-screen highlighting, typed Writing with a live word count — removes the software as a test-day variable. One planning note worth building in: Engineers Australia accepts scores only from a secure test centre and dated within three years of lodging, so a centre-based sitting timed to your application is the safe route.

Competent English: the Engineers Australia minimum
EA's named English standard, expressed in IELTS bands. This is the checkable structure; verify the current wording on the Engineers Australia site.
| Skill | IELTS minimum (Academic or General) |
|---|---|
| Listening | 6.0 |
| Reading | 6.0 |
| Writing | 6.0 |
| Speaking | 6.0 |
There is no separate overall-band rule — each of the four skills must reach 6.0, and a single skill below it fails the standard. Both Academic and General Training count, One Skill Retake results are accepted, and the test must be from a secure test centre and dated within three years of lodging. This bar is lower than Australia's clinical registration (AHPRA nursing and medicine sit at Academic 7.0 in every skill).
The tests Engineers Australia accepts, and the per-skill minimum for each
EA accepts several tests in place of IELTS, each with its own per-skill minimum. These are the figures for tests dated on or after 7 August 2025 — confirm the live number for your test at the source.
| Test | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS (Academic or General) | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| TOEFL iBT | 16 | 16 | 19 | 19 |
| PTE Academic | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 169 | 169 | 169 | 169 |
| LANGUAGECERT Academic | 57 | 60 | 64 | 70 |
| Michigan English Test (MET) | 56 | 55 | 57 | 48 |
| CELPIP General | 7 | 7 | 7 | 7 |
Engineers Australia revised its alternative-test thresholds from 7 August 2025, so tests dated earlier use a different table — always confirm the current minimum for your test on the Engineers Australia site. OET is not on Engineers Australia's accepted list. Across the revision, only IELTS held steady at 6.0 in every skill.

Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score do I need for the Engineers Australia skills assessment?
Competent English — a minimum of 6.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There is no separate overall-band requirement, so every skill must reach 6.0. Both Academic and General Training are accepted, as are results including a One Skill Retake. Confirm the current wording on the Engineers Australia site before booking.
Does Engineers Australia accept IELTS General Training or only Academic?
Both. Unlike university admission, which reads Academic almost without exception, Engineers Australia accepts either the Academic or the General Training version at 6.0 in each skill. Choose the variant that suits the rest of your migration plan, since Listening and Speaking are identical across the two.
Is the Engineers Australia English bar the same as for nurses or doctors?
No — it is lower. Engineers Australia asks for Competent English (6.0 in each skill), whereas AHPRA registration for nurses and doctors reads IELTS Academic at 7.0 in every component. Clearing 6.0 satisfies the engineering assessment, though a higher result can add English points to a skilled-visa profile.
Can I use PTE Academic or TOEFL instead of IELTS?
Yes. Engineers Australia also accepts PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced and several others, each with its own per-skill minimum. OET is not on its accepted list. Because Engineers Australia revised these thresholds in August 2025, confirm the current minimum for your chosen test at the source.
Do I always need to sit an English test?
Not always. Engineers Australia recognises exemptions — for example graduating from an eligible Australian course (around two academic years at AQF level 6 or above), or holding a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland. Exemptions need documentary evidence and can change, so verify your case on the Engineers Australia pages.
Does meeting Competent English guarantee my visa?
No. A positive Engineers Australia assessment plus Competent English is the migration gate for engineering occupations, but your visa and points are decided by the Department of Home Affairs. Higher English levels earn additional points there. Verify the current visa and points rules on the official Home Affairs pages.
