IELTS for Canadian universities
Study applications in Canada run on IELTS Academic, yet the band you must reach is fixed nowhere nationally — it belongs to the individual university, and is frequently tightened again by the department that admits you. Most requirements pair an overall figure with a floor on particular skills, so your first move is to find the exact number your programme prints. And the Academic band that opens the classroom door is a separate measurement from the CLB level Canada consults later for a work permit or permanent residence.

Which IELTS do you need for a Canadian university?
Admission to a Canadian degree — undergraduate, master's, PhD, and the foundation or pathway routes that feed them — is built on IELTS Academic, and professional licensing bodies read the same paper. Academic and General Training share one Listening test and one Speaking test; they diverge only on Reading and on Writing Task 1, and General Training Reading is marked on a harsher band conversion. Since admissions offices only ever look at the Academic result, that is the paper to rehearse.
General Training belongs to the immigration half of Canada — Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Programs — rather than to study. A common path is to sit Academic first for the qualification, then General Training afterwards for the move to residence, so many applicants take both at different stages. Always confirm the accepted variant on your programme's own admissions page before you book a date.

Who sets the band — and where to check it
Canada operates no federal or province-wide English score for university entry. The overall requirement is written by the individual institution, and very often narrowed again by the specific faculty or programme, usually with a minimum pinned to particular skills — Writing and Speaking most of all, since teaching, nursing and other communication-heavy fields lean on them. Because that figure lives on the programme's own page and nowhere central, the requirement that governs you is your course's, not the country's.
A department is free to set a bar above its university's blanket admissions minimum, which is why the programme listing beats the university's summary page every time. Many schools also run waiver policies — typically for applicants who have already studied full-time in English for a set number of years — so if English was your medium of instruction, check whether your target waives IELTS before you pay for it.

Academic now, CLB later: Canada's two-scale trap
Canada is unusual in reading your English on two separate scales at two separate moments, and confusing them is an expensive error. For admission, a university reads your IELTS Academic band. For the work-permit and permanent-residence routes that frequently follow a degree, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reads a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level — and the CLB grid converts from IELTS General Training alone.
The practical upshot is that your Academic score admits you to the programme, yet cannot be translated into a CLB level for the Post-Graduation Work Permit or Express Entry down the line. Applicants who intend to stay generally book a fresh General Training test after they graduate and read it against the CLB conversion. Our IELTS-to-CLB converter maps each General Training band onto its CLB level, so you can see the destination before you sit.

Practising for the computer-delivered test
Canadian test centres offer computer-delivered IELTS widely, and its on-screen mechanics — Listening audio that plays once with a brief review window, highlighter tools over the passages, and a Writing editor with a running word count — are precisely what CD IELTS Prep mirrors. Working through full, timed mocks inside the identical software takes the format off your list of test-day worries and leaves only the English to manage.
Since Canadian programmes so regularly attach floors to individual skills, your revision should be aimed skill by skill too. The reports page splits your accuracy by question type inside each paper, so rather than replaying entire tests you can pinpoint where marks are draining away — heading-matching in Reading, say, or Task 1 in Writing — and drill exactly that.

Typical IELTS bands for Canadian university study
Canada publishes no nationwide university minimum; the band is set by the individual university and frequently by the faculty within it. Treat the ranges below as calibration points drawn from published requirements, not official cut-offs, and confirm the exact band on your programme page.
| Study level | Typical IELTS Academic ask |
|---|---|
| College diploma, foundation or pathway | 5.5 - 6.0 overall |
| Undergraduate (bachelor's) | 6.0 - 6.5 overall |
| Postgraduate (master's, PhD) | 6.5 - 7.0 overall |
| MBA and some professional master's | 7.0 - 7.5 overall |
| Competitive programmes (nursing, education, law, journalism) | 7.0+ with per-module floors |
Bands differ from one institution to the next, and often from one faculty to another, typically paired with a floor on individual skills — Writing and Speaking most commonly. Because a department can pitch its bar above the university's general minimum, read the specific programme page rather than the central admissions page. Many universities also publish waivers for applicants whose earlier study was conducted in English.
IELTS across a Canadian study journey
Two distinct IELTS scales bracket a Canadian degree: the Academic band a university reads to admit you, and the CLB level IRCC reads for the work-permit and residence routes that come afterwards. One is not a substitute for the other.
| Stage | What is read | Which IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Admission to a university or college | An overall Academic band, usually with per-module floors | Academic — the institution sets the number |
| Study permit | Your institution's admission and English proof | No separate IELTS band for the regular stream — verify current IRCC rules |
| Post-Graduation Work Permit | A minimum CLB level set by IRCC policy | General Training, converted to CLB — Academic does not convert |
| Permanent residence (Express Entry, PNP) | A minimum CLB per skill | General Training, converted to CLB |
IRCC derives CLB from IELTS General Training only, so an Academic result — the very score universities demand for entry — has no CLB equivalent. Language rules for work permits and residence are policy figures that shift over time, so confirm the current minimum on the official IRCC pages. Our IELTS-to-CLB tool shows the CLB level a given General Training band earns.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for a Canadian university?
Academic. University and college entry, and professional registration, read IELTS Academic in nearly every case; General Training is reserved for the immigration side of Canada, not for study. Because the Listening and Speaking papers are identical in both, the practical difference sits in Reading and in Writing Task 1 — so rehearse the Academic versions of those.
What IELTS score do Canadian universities require?
No single standard exists. Bachelor's programmes commonly ask for roughly 6.0 to 6.5 overall and master's or doctoral programmes around 6.5 to 7.0, with competitive and clinical courses higher still — but the figure is set by the university and faculty, usually with floors on particular skills. Check the precise requirement on your own programme page rather than a general admissions overview.
Does the study permit set its own IELTS minimum?
For the standard study-permit stream, IRCC attaches no fixed IELTS band; the qualifying English evidence is your institution's admission requirement. Study-permit rules are revised from time to time, so verify the current position for your circumstances on the official IRCC pages before booking.
My university accepted my Academic score — why would I need General Training later?
Because Canada measures your English on two scales. Universities read your IELTS Academic band to admit you, but IRCC reads a CLB level for work permits and permanent residence, and CLB is derived from General Training alone — never from Academic. Anyone planning to work or settle after the degree usually sits a separate General Training test for that stage.
Do Canadian universities set minimum scores for individual modules?
Frequently, yes. Many programmes quote an overall band alongside a floor on individual skills — Writing and Speaking most often, with higher floors on teaching, nursing and other communication-heavy courses. A strong overall band will not compensate for a skill that falls under the stated floor, so bring each one up to its own target.
Can I practise the exact computer-delivered format here?
Yes. Every mock recreates the computer-delivered interface used in Canadian test centres: Listening audio that plays once with a review window, sections timed by server-side clocks, on-screen highlighting, and typed answers with a live word count.
