Registering as a doctor with the UK's General Medical Council carries one of the highest English requirements of any regulator: an overall IELTS Academic band of 7.5, with no single skill below 7.0. The bar sits above the one set for nurses, and it is the per-skill floor — not the average — that most applicants have to plan around. Which IELTS the GMC accepts
The General Medical Council accepts IELTS Academic as evidence of English for registration with a licence to practise. The requirement is an overall band of 7.5, with at least 7.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. General Training and the IELTS Life Skills tests are not accepted for this route.
This is a registration requirement rather than a visa one, so a standard IELTS Academic result from an approved test centre is what the GMC reads — you do not need the UKVI version for the GMC itself. Any immigration route you take runs on its own, separate rules, so check those independently.

The per-skill floor, not the average
The number that catches strong candidates is the 7.0 in every skill. There is no averaging: an applicant scoring 8.5 in three skills but 6.5 in the fourth does not meet the requirement, even though the overall band clears 7.5. Each skill has to stand on its own.
For doctors, Writing is the skill that most often falls short of that floor, so it tends to deserve the largest share of preparation. A candidate who is comfortable in clinical English can still lose the sitting on a single Writing band.
The GMC allows scores to be combined across two sittings taken within six months of one another, provided each sitting meets set conditions. Those rules are revised from time to time, so read the current version on the GMC site rather than relying on a past applicant's experience.

OET Medicine as the alternative
If IELTS is not the right fit, the GMC accepts the Occupational English Test at grade B in each of the four sub-tests. It must be the Medicine version of OET, and the same two-year validity window applies.
OET is built around healthcare scenarios — a referral letter, a patient consultation — rather than the general academic tasks of IELTS, which some doctors find closer to their working English. The GMC treats the two tests as equivalent evidence, so the choice is about which format suits you, not about clearing a lower bar.

How the GMC bar compares
The GMC sets a higher English requirement than the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Nurses and midwives need an overall 7.0 with 7.0 in three skills and 6.5 in Writing; doctors need 7.5 overall with 7.0 across the board. If a nursing colleague met the standard, do not assume the same result clears the GMC.
English evidence is also separate from PLAB and from any postgraduate qualification you use to register — it demonstrates language, not medical knowledge, and you will usually need it in place as part of, or before, your GMC application. Both regulators recognise other evidence routes too, such as a medical or nursing degree taught and examined in English, which sit outside the score table entirely.
