IELTS for NMBI nurse registration in Ireland
A nurse or midwife trained outside Ireland clears one language gate on the way to the register, and a single regulator sets it: the NMBI. Which IELTS — or OET — does NMBI accept?
For nurses and midwives, the NMBI is the only body that assesses overseas English, and it does so as one strand of a wider registration decision. It reads two exams: IELTS Academic — the module built around university-style tasks — or OET, which sets its scenarios in clinical settings. IELTS General Training, whatever it is used for elsewhere, does not count toward this register.
The exemption question sits alongside the exam. An applicant educated and trained in a country where English is both first and native language, or whose nursing or midwifery programme was delivered and examined wholly in English, may be waved through without a test — but that call is the board's alone, made on the paperwork you file. Anyone outside those categories sits IELTS Academic or the OET to the published floor, so check your own position on the official NMBI pages before you book a date.

How NMBI reads your result: overall and per section
This is the part that catches people. The board does not average your four skills into one number and wave through a healthy total — it sets a bar under each skill and expects every one to clear it. On IELTS Academic the shape is an overall 7.0, with 7.0 held in listening, reading and speaking and a concession that drops writing to 6.5. A commanding speaking score cannot lift a reading result that has slipped under its own bar, so the work here is skill-by-skill rather than a chase for the headline figure.
OET is graded the same way — a floor under each of its four sub-tests, with writing sitting a grade below the others, mirroring the IELTS concession. The combine-sittings concession
Miss a single skill and you are not necessarily back to square one. The NMBI allows two IELTS sittings to be read together, so a section that fell short in one attempt can be met in another, rather than every skill having to land in one exam — provided the two sittings sit inside a defined window and each skill still reaches its floor across the pair.
The concession comes with its own conditions — how close together the sittings must fall, and the level each skill has to hit — and the board can rewrite them. Plan on the principle that two nearby Academic sittings may be combined, but verify the exact terms at source, and remember the concession is designed for the candidate who came within one skill of a clean pass, not for stitching together two weak attempts.
