IELTS for HCPC registration
The Health and Care Professions Council regulates fifteen professions — from physiotherapists and radiographers to paramedics, dietitians and biomedical scientists — and internationally-trained applicants must evidence their English before joining the register. For most of those professions the HCPC route runs on IELTS Academic, read not as one overall figure but as a floor that every single skill has to clear. Knowing which of your four skills sits closest to that floor is where preparation begins.

Which test HCPC accepts
The version HCPC recognises is IELTS Academic — General Training is not accepted for registration. The requirement is expressed as an overall band with a minimum in each of the four sub-tests, so both numbers matter. HCPC also accepts the Occupational English Test (OET) as an alternative to IELTS, which some clinicians prefer because its material is drawn from healthcare settings.
Not every applicant has to sit a language test. Those who trained in English, or who have already practised in an English-speaking country, may be able to evidence their English another way — HCPC decides what it will accept. Confirm what applies to your case on the official HCPC website (hcpc-uk.org) before booking anything.

How the score is read — a floor, not an average
HCPC judges each of the four sub-tests against its own minimum. A strong Reading band cannot lift a weak Writing band: if any single skill falls below the threshold, the result does not meet the requirement even when the overall band sits comfortably above 7.0. That is why targeted work on your weakest skill counts for more than pushing an already-strong one higher.
HCPC's guidance is that the required bands should come from one test — combining components from two separate sittings is generally not accepted, so it is worth being ready across all four before you book. Results are also expected to be reasonably recent; HCPC sets the acceptable date range, so verify the current window at the source rather than assuming.

Where the bar sits higher — speech and language therapists
Most HCPC-regulated professions share the same threshold, but speech and language therapists are held to a higher standard because precise spoken and written English is central to the role itself. Both the overall band and the per-skill minimum are set higher than for other professions; the exact figures are in the table below.
If you are registering as a speech and language therapist, plan for the higher target from the very first practice test — the gap between the general threshold and the SLT threshold is a full band in every skill, and it is not a jump you want to discover late.

Practising for the Academic paper
For clinicians whose English is strong but untested under exam conditions, the pinch points are usually Writing across the two Academic tasks and Speaking under time — the skills where the 6.5 floor is missed by candidates who would pass a conversation easily. Sitting full timed Academic mocks in the on-screen format removes the interface as a variable and shows you which skill is still sitting under the line.
Every mock here scores Listening and Reading instantly against the official-style band conversion, and the writing checker returns a structured estimate across the four marking criteria. That turns a vague sense of readiness into a per-skill picture you can act on before you pay for a real sitting.

HCPC IELTS Academic requirement, skill by skill
The threshold that applies to most HCPC-regulated professions — physiotherapists, radiographers, paramedics, dietitians, occupational therapists, biomedical scientists and the rest. Each skill is judged against its own minimum, and HCPC verifies the bands on your Test Report Form.
| Skill | HCPC minimum (IELTS Academic) |
|---|---|
| Listening | 6.5 |
| Reading | 6.5 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 6.5 |
| Overall band | 7.0 |
IELTS Academic only — General Training is not accepted for HCPC registration. Every sub-test must reach its minimum in the same test; a high overall does not offset a skill below the floor. Confirm the current requirement for your profession on the official HCPC website (hcpc-uk.org).
Where HCPC sets a higher bar, and the OET alternative
One profession is held to a higher IELTS standard, and OET is accepted in place of IELTS. The figures below are the stable structure HCPC publishes; verify the live requirement at the source before you book either test.
| Route | IELTS Academic | OET alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Most HCPC professions (physiotherapy, radiography, paramedics, dietetics, etc.) | 7.0 overall, 6.5 in each skill | Grade B in each sub-test |
| Speech and language therapists | 8.0 overall, 7.5 in each skill | Higher grade set by HCPC — verify |
The higher speech-and-language-therapy threshold reflects how central spoken and written English is to that role. OET grades and any profession-specific OET requirement are set by HCPC; check hcpc-uk.org before booking.

Frequently asked questions
Which IELTS does HCPC accept — Academic or General Training?
IELTS Academic. HCPC does not accept General Training for registration. For most professions you need an overall band of 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each of the four sub-tests; confirm your profession's exact requirement on hcpc-uk.org.
Does HCPC accept OET instead of IELTS?
Yes. HCPC accepts the Occupational English Test as an alternative to IELTS, typically at grade B in each sub-test. Because its content is drawn from healthcare, some clinicians find it fits their vocabulary better. Check the current OET requirement for your profession with HCPC.
Can I combine scores from two IELTS sittings for HCPC?
HCPC's guidance is that the required bands should come from a single test — components from two different sittings are generally not accepted. Since one weak skill can sink an otherwise strong result, it is worth being ready across all four before you book. Verify the current rule with HCPC.
Why do speech and language therapists need a higher IELTS score?
The role depends heavily on precise spoken and written English, so HCPC holds speech and language therapists to a higher threshold — a higher overall band and a higher minimum in every skill than other professions. The figures are in the table above; confirm them with HCPC.
Does a high overall band make up for one low skill?
No. HCPC reads each sub-test against its own minimum, so a 6.0 in Writing fails the requirement even if your overall band is 7.5. This is exactly why targeted practice on your weakest skill matters more than lifting one that already clears the floor.
How recent does my IELTS result have to be for HCPC?
HCPC expects a reasonably recent result and sets the acceptable date range; IELTS itself reports results for two years. Check the window that applies to your application on the official HCPC website before you sit the test.
