CLB 8 requires IELTS General Training Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 6.5. It comfortably clears the CLB 7 minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker program, but sits one level below the CLB 9 that most competitive Express Entry profiles target.
| Ability | Minimum IELTS GT band |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.5 |
| Reading | 6.5 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 6.5 |
Each ability has its own CLB level; scores are not averaged. To meet a requirement in all four abilities, each skill must reach the required level. Express Entry accepts IELTS General Training, not IELTS Academic.
What CLB 8 is used for

Should you retake to reach CLB 9?
Usually yes, if your profile is competitive on other factors. The gap from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is half a band in Listening (7.5 to 8.0) and half a band in each of Reading, Writing and Speaking (6.5 to 7.0) — a realistic target with focused practice, and the largest single CRS gain available to most candidates.
Work out which abilities are actually short before booking. A candidate with Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 7.0 has CLB 8 in Listening and Writing, and CLB 9 in Reading and Speaking. Both Listening and Writing need improvement to reach CLB 9 in all four abilities.
