This free CRS calculator estimates your Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System score out of 1,200 using the points grid IRCC publishes on canada.ca. Enter your IELTS General Training band for each skill and it converts each one to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level, then adds age, education, work experience, spouse factors, skill transferability and additional points. Job offers have earned no CRS points since 25 March 2025.
This is an estimate, not your official score
The calculator restates IRCC's published criteria for orientation only and is not immigration advice. Your official score is the one IRCC's own CRS tool and your Express Entry profile show. Always confirm against the official CRS criteria before making a decision.
How the CRS score is calculated
Every Express Entry profile is scored in four parts. Your spouse or partner only changes the columns used when they are coming with you and are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; otherwise you are scored as a single applicant. The section maximums below add up to 1,200.
CRS sections and maximum points| Section | With spouse or partner | Without spouse or partner |
|---|
| Core / human capital | 460 | 500 |
| Spouse or partner factors | 40 | Does not apply |
| Skill transferability | 100 | 100 |
| Additional points | 600 | 600 |
| Maximum total | 1,200 | 1,200 |
IELTS General Training bands and CRS language points
Language is the factor an IELTS retake can change. Each skill converts to its own CLB level through IRCC's equivalency table, and the first-official-language points are awarded per ability, so the four results are added rather than averaged. Points stop rising at CLB 10.
Minimum IELTS General Training band for each CLB level, and first-official-language points per ability| CLB | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Points (single) | Points (with partner) |
|---|
| CLB 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 | 34 | 32 |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 31 | 29 |

| CLB 4 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 6 | 6 |

Second official language (French)
With English as your first official language, TEF Canada or TCF Canada results add second-language points per ability, capped at 24 for a single applicant and 22 with an accompanying spouse or partner.

Education points
Education completed outside Canada earns points only with an Educational Credential Assessment. A "professional degree" means a program in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry, law, chiropractic medicine or pharmacy.
CRS points for level of education| Level of education | With spouse or partner | Without spouse or partner |
|---|
| Less than secondary school (high school) | 0 | 0 |
| Secondary diploma (high school graduation) | 28 | 30 |

| Master's degree, or professional degree needed to practice a licensed profession | 126 | 135 |
| Doctoral (PhD) degree | 140 | 150 |
Canadian work experience points
IRCC defines Canadian work experience as working for a Canadian employer in Canada; remote work counts if you were physically in Canada. Foreign work experience earns no core points but feeds skill transferability.
CRS points for Canadian work experience| Canadian work experience | With spouse or partner | Without spouse or partner |
|---|
| None or less than a year | 0 | 0 |
| 1 year | 35 | 40 |

Spouse or common-law partner points
An accompanying spouse or partner can add up to 40 points. Their language points use their first-official-language test results, per ability.

Skill transferability points
Skill transferability rewards combinations. Education and foreign work experience each pair with either your first-official-language result or your Canadian work experience; each group is capped at 50 points, a trade certificate of qualification adds up to 50 more, and the whole section is capped at 100. The language columns need the level in all four abilities, which is why one weak skill can cost far more than its own language points.
Education combined with language or Canadian work experience (group max 50)| Education | CLB 7+ in all four (one or more under 9) | CLB 9+ in all four | + 1 year Canadian work | + 2 years or more Canadian work |

Canadian study earns its 15 or 30 points only if English or French as a second language made up no more than half of the study; you did not study under an award that required you to return to your home country after graduation; you studied at a school in Canada (foreign campuses don't count); you were enrolled full time for at least eight months and were physically present in Canada for at least eight months, unless you completed the program (in whole or in part) between March 2020 and August 2022. These conditions come from the help text in IRCC's own CRS tool.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Express Entry CRS score calculated?
The Comprehensive Ranking System adds four parts. Core human capital (age, education, official languages and Canadian work experience) is worth up to 500 points, or up to 460 plus 40 spouse points when your spouse or partner comes with you. Skill transferability adds up to 100 and additional points up to 600. The maximum total is 1,200.
Do job offers still give CRS points?
No. As of March 25, 2025, IRCC removed job-offer points from the CRS: 200 for jobs in NOC Major Group 00 and 50 for other skilled jobs. A job offer can still count toward eligibility for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and some provincial nominee streams, so IRCC says to keep it in your Express Entry profile.
How many CRS points is IELTS 8777 (CLB 9)?
IELTS General Training Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0 is CLB 9 in all four abilities. That earns 31 points per ability without an accompanying spouse or partner (124 in total) or 29 with one (116). CLB 9 in all four abilities also unlocks the higher skill-transferability column for education and foreign work experience.
Does IELTS Academic count for the CRS?
No. For Express Entry, IRCC accepts the IELTS General Training option only, and it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake. Your results must be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence.
How does a spouse or common-law partner change my CRS score?
If your spouse or partner is coming with you and is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, your core points use the with-spouse column (maximum 460) and your partner can add up to 40 points: 10 for education, 20 for first-official-language results and 10 for Canadian work experience. If they are a citizen or permanent resident, or are not coming with you, you are scored as a single applicant.
How many CRS points does a provincial nomination give?
A provincial or territorial nomination adds 600 points. Additional points are capped at 600 in total, so a nomination on its own fills that section.
How many CRS points can French add?
French can add up to 50 additional points: 25 for NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities with CLB 4 or lower in English (or no English test), and 50 for NCLC 7 or higher in French with CLB 5 or higher in all four English abilities. French results also count as a second official language for up to 24 core points, or 22 with an accompanying spouse or partner.
What CRS score do I need for an invitation?
There is no fixed pass mark. Each round invites the highest-ranked eligible candidates, and IRCC publishes the score of the lowest-ranked candidate invited in every round on its Express Entry rounds of invitations page.
Is this CRS calculator official?
No. It is an independent estimate built from the criteria IRCC publishes on canada.ca. IRCC's own CRS tool and the score shown in your Express Entry profile are authoritative.
