IELTS requirements for Irish universities
For an Irish degree, international applicants evidence their English with IELTS Academic — the study variant, separate from the General Training paper aimed at work and migration. Ireland sets no single national band; instead your institution, and usually the individual course, fixes an overall figure plus — very often — a minimum on each of the four modules, and because IELTS averages those four scores to the nearest half band, that per-module floor is what keeps a strong average from masking a weak skill. Locating your own programme's band, and the modules it protects, is where preparation starts.

Why Irish universities read IELTS Academic
Degrees in Ireland are delivered and assessed in English, and the qualification admissions offices recognise for that is IELTS Academic — whether you are applying to a bachelor's, a one-year taught master's or a research programme. Academic and General Training use the same Listening and Speaking papers, but their Reading and Writing Task 1 sections are built differently, so rehearse the Academic paper the admissions team will actually be reading.
Foundation, pathway and pre-sessional English routes are the one exception — they take lower scores, frequently make a conditional offer, and may run their own internal English assessment. For entry straight onto a full degree, though, Academic is the paper that counts. A small number of programmes taught through the Irish language sit outside IELTS entirely, so check the individual course page if that applies to you.

No country-wide minimum — the programme fixes it
There is no ministry-set pass mark for English across Irish higher education. Individual institutions publish their own overall band, and many faculties go further, listing it course by course and attaching a minimum to specific modules so that one weak skill cannot be averaged away. The band that actually governs your application is the one on your programme's own page — never a generic admissions summary, and never a figure set nationally.
Since each institution owns its figure and can adjust it from one intake to the next, treat any band quoted second-hand as a rough guide only. What stays constant is the structure — an overall band, usually paired with per-module floors — and the table below lays out the typical ranges that structure takes at each level. Verify your precise number on the university's live course page before you book a test.

How the typical ranges work by level
Taught awards — bachelor's degrees and the one-year master's that Ireland is known for — cluster around 6.5 overall, typically with nothing under 6.0 in any single module. Research degrees and the more selective subjects usually pitch a notch above that. Where the course leads to a profession built on communication — nursing and other clinically registered fields, initial teacher education, law and journalism — the bar sits highest, often near 7.0 with Writing and Speaking held to their own elevated minimum.
Foundation, pathway and pre-sessional English programmes exist to carry applicants who fall short of direct entry, so they admit on lower scores — commonly in the 5.0 to 5.5 band — and lift you toward the degree's own requirement over the course. Aim at the band for the level you are genuinely entering, not at whatever headline number the university advertises.

Practising for the computer-delivered format
Test centres in Ireland run the computer-delivered version of IELTS, and its on-screen environment — Listening audio that plays once with a brief review window, highlighting you drag with the cursor, and a Writing box that counts your words as you type — is precisely what CD IELTS Prep mirrors. Working through full timed mocks in the same software takes the interface off the table on exam day, so all that is left to manage is your English.
And because Irish programmes lean so heavily on per-module floors, train module by module rather than only by whole paper. The reports page splits your accuracy by question type inside each skill, so rather than re-sitting entire tests you can pinpoint where marks drain away — heading-matching in Reading, or Task 1 in Writing — and drill exactly that. Since the Listening and Speaking papers are shared with General Training, that work carries over no matter which route you end up on.

Typical IELTS band ranges by Irish study level
Ireland fixes no national minimum — the band belongs to each institution and course. The figures here are the typical overall ranges by level, not any single institution's rule; confirm your exact band and any per-module floor on the specific course page.
| Study level | Typical overall band | Per-module pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation / pathway / pre-sessional English | 5.0–5.5 | Often no floor; designed to bridge you up to the degree band |
| Undergraduate degree | 6.0–6.5 | Commonly no single band below 5.5–6.0 |
| Taught postgraduate (master's) | 6.5 | Frequently no band below 6.0; some ask 6.5 across the board |
| Research degree (MPhil / PhD) | 6.5–7.0 | Higher overall; departments may set their own floor |
| Clinical, teaching, law & journalism | 7.0 | Writing and Speaking usually protected at 6.5–7.0 |
Ranges describe where most programmes fall — they are not a guarantee, a cap, or any single university's published minimum. Bands are revised by intake and vary by subject, so the only number that binds you is the one on your own course listing. IELTS results must normally be no more than two years old when you apply.
Reading the requirement on a course page
Irish course pages state the band in a few standard ways. Whichever you meet, the exact figure is the university's to set — this is how to read what it means for your profile.
| How the course states it | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Overall 6.5 | The average of your four module bands must reach 6.5 |
| Overall 6.5, no band below 6.0 | 6.5 average AND every module at least 6.0 — the floor can fail an otherwise-passing profile |
| 6.5 with 6.5 in Writing | Overall 6.5 plus a specific higher or protected module |
| CEFR B2 / C1 | A framework level the university maps to an IELTS band range — ask which band they read |
| 'Or equivalent' accepted | Other tests such as TOEFL, PTE Academic or Duolingo may substitute — check the accepted-tests list |
The overall band is the mean of the four module scores, rounded to the nearest half band; a per-module floor is checked separately and is the most common reason a passing average is still rejected.

Frequently asked questions
Do Irish universities want IELTS Academic or General Training?
Academic. An Irish degree application is assessed on the IELTS Academic paper; General Training is designed for employment and migration, not study. Both versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests but part ways on Reading and Writing Task 1, so book Academic for any Irish university offer.
What IELTS band do I need for an Irish university?
There is no single figure, because the band is decided institution by institution — and frequently course by course. Taught programmes tend to gather around 6.5 overall, undergraduate entry can sit a little lower, and clinical or teaching awards climb higher, but the only number that settles your application is the one on your specific course page. Treat any band you have seen quoted as indicative and confirm the current requirement there.
What does 'no band below 6.0' mean?
It is a per-module floor. Alongside the overall band, the course demands that each of the four skills clears a set minimum — 6.0 is the usual one. Because IELTS builds your overall score from the average of the four modules, a high average cannot lift a single skill that has dropped beneath the floor, which is why the modules matter individually and not just in total.
Is IELTS the only English test Irish universities accept?
No. Most Irish institutions also list alternatives — TOEFL, PTE Academic and, increasingly, Duolingo — and some offer an in-house test tied to a conditional place. IELTS Academic remains the most broadly accepted, but check your course's accepted-tests list; if it quotes a CEFR level such as B2 or C1 instead of a band, ask the admissions office which IELTS score they treat it as.
Does the Irish study visa set its own IELTS minimum?
Usually not. Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) tends to lean on the English evidence and offer supplied by your institution — which has to appear on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) — rather than imposing a separate visa band of its own. Requirements differ by nationality and are revised over time, so check the current rules on the official ISD pages before you rely on them.
Can I practise the exact computer-delivered format here?
Yes. Every mock rebuilds the computer-delivered setup used in Irish test centres — Listening audio that plays a single time with a review window, sections timed on server-side clocks, cursor highlighting on the passages, and typed answers with a running word count.
