IELTS requirements for Australian universities
Admission to an Australian university rests on one paper — IELTS Academic — assessed on two axes at the same time: an overall band that rises with the level of the degree, and a minimum sitting under every module that one low result can breach on its own. Nothing is fixed sector-wide; the band that governs your offer is written into your course listing by the university, and frequently by the faculty, so preparation starts there rather than with any general figure.

Which IELTS do Australian universities want?
Every route into an Australian university — a bachelor's programme, a coursework master's, or a research degree — is read against IELTS Academic, the version written around university-level reading and writing. General Training surfaces on some skilled-migration streams instead, never in the admissions office. Since the Listening and Speaking papers are shared between the two versions and only Reading and the Writing Task 1 set them apart, rehearse the Academic papers your offer will be measured against.
No band applies across the whole sector. The university writes its own requirement, and a faculty or an individual course often writes a stricter one, so the figure that binds your application is your programme's — published on its course page, not held in any central rulebook. Read that listing, confirm it, and aim at it. Registration bodies behind fields such as nursing and teaching layer their own Academic requirement over the top, and it usually sits higher than the university's.

Overall band and per-module minimums: how offers are scored
An Australian offer grades your IELTS on two measures at once. One is the overall band, which climbs with the level of the qualification; the other is a minimum fixed beneath every individual module. Both conditions run in parallel and both must be satisfied — a strong overall band counts for nothing if one module lands below the line the offer draws under it. That per-module line, rather than the headline figure, is where most narrowly missed offers actually fall.
Courses in high demand raise both bars deliberately. Nursing and midwifery degrees are pegged to the AHPRA registration they lead into, so their module minimums are set uniformly high; initial teacher education leans hardest on Listening and Speaking; law, medicine and other clinical programmes draw their own steep lines under every skill. Because the module minimum is the hurdle that trips near-miss candidates, prepare to your weakest skill's target rather than to the average. The provider owns these numbers and can revise them, so treat any figure you have seen as a guide and check the live requirement on the course page.

Where to confirm it — and the details that trip people up
Read the course page itself, not the university's general admissions or international portal: departments habitually set the bar above the institutional baseline, while a foundation or pathway entry sits below it. If you fall short on one skill only, ask two things — whether the university will make a conditional offer bundled with an ELICOS English course, and whether it accepts IELTS One Skill Retake, which lets you re-sit that single module inside the eligibility window instead of the whole exam. Both Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs recognise the One Skill Retake, which matters because the same result also has to clear the student visa.
Two more points differ from one university to the next. Whether IELTS Online — the at-home version — is accepted for admission is a per-institution decision, and it is separate again from whether Home Affairs will take it for the student visa, so verify both before booking. Universities also expect a result that is still current, commonly within a two-year window, so schedule your sitting to line up with the application rather than banking a score long in advance.

Practising for the format, and for the minimum
Australian test centres run IELTS on computer, and CD IELTS Prep mirrors that on-screen environment: Listening audio that plays once with a brief review window, on-screen highlighting, and a typed Writing box with a running word count. Working through full, timed Academic mocks in the same interface takes the software out of the equation on test day and leaves only your English to manage.
Since an Australian offer can be lost on one module alone, rehearse module by module. The reports page breaks your accuracy down by question type inside each paper, so rather than re-running whole mocks and hoping the weak skill drifts upward, you can see exactly where marks leak — matching-headings sets in Reading, say, or Task 1 in Writing — and drill that until the module clears the minimum your offer sets. Listening and Speaking practice carries over to whichever pathway you pursue afterwards.

Typical IELTS Academic bands by Australian degree level
No figure is fixed sector-wide — these are the observed ranges to calibrate against, and each university (frequently each faculty) sets its own overall band and per-module minimum.
| Study level | Typical overall band | Common per-skill note |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation / pathway programme | 5.5 – 6.0 | A stepping stone into a full degree; floors are lower |
| Undergraduate (bachelor's) | 6.0 – 6.5 | Commonly no single band below 6.0 |
| Postgraduate coursework (master's) | 6.5 – 7.0 | Often 6.0 in every band, sometimes a 6.5 floor |
| Postgraduate research (MPhil / PhD) | 6.5 – 7.0 | Writing floor frequently 6.5; varies by faculty |
| Nursing & midwifery | 7.0 | Usually 7.0 in every band, aligned to AHPRA registration |
| Initial teacher education | 7.0 – 7.5 | Listening & Speaking often 8.0 |
| Law, medicine & clinical | 7.0 – 7.5 | High per-band floors — read the faculty page |
The university sets the exact overall band and any per-module minimum; these ranges are for calibration, not official cut-offs. Confirm the current figure on your specific course page, and note most universities expect a recent result (often within two years).
Why the overall band isn't the whole story
An Australian offer usually pairs an overall band with a minimum under every module, and your result has to clear both. Worked against a common pattern — 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 — here is how three profiles land.
| Your four bands (L / R / W / S) | How it reads | Meets 6.5 overall, none below 6.0? |
|---|---|---|
| 7.5 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 5.5 | Averages to 7.0 overall, but Speaking 5.5 is under the 6.0 minimum | No — a module fails |
| 6.5 / 6.0 / 6.5 / 6.5 | Averages to 6.5 overall, and every band is 6.0 or above | Yes — both hurdles cleared |
| 6.0 / 6.5 / 6.0 / 6.0 | Averages to 6.0 overall — half a band short of 6.5 | No — the overall band is too low |
IELTS rounds each module to the nearest half band and the overall to the nearest half or whole band, so the average and the reported overall can differ. The 6.5 / no-band-below-6.0 pattern is illustrative — your course sets its own overall band and module minimum.

Frequently asked questions
Do Australian universities accept IELTS General Training or Academic?
For admission — and for the professional registration many Australian degrees lead into — it is Academic. General Training belongs to some skilled-migration streams, not the admissions office. Because the Listening and Speaking papers are identical in both versions, confirm your course reads Academic, then rehearse the Academic Reading and Writing papers specifically.
What IELTS band do I need for an Australian university?
No single figure covers the sector. The overall band typically rises with the level of study — lower for a bachelor's programme, higher for a coursework master's — and climbs again for high-demand fields such as nursing, teaching and medicine. Your university, and often the specific course, fixes its own number, so read it off your actual course page rather than relying on a general benchmark.
What is a per-module minimum or sub-score requirement?
Alongside the overall band, most Australian offers draw a minimum beneath every module — a line each skill has to clear in its own right. You satisfy the offer only when both the overall band and every module minimum are met, which is why a strong overall score with one module low, Writing say, can still fall short. Prepare to the module minimum, not just the overall figure.
Can I retake just one module for an Australian university?
Often, yes. IELTS One Skill Retake lets you re-sit a single module within the eligibility window instead of repeating the whole test, and it is recognised by Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs — useful because the same result also has to clear your student visa. Check that your particular university accepts it before you count on it, since that decision is theirs.
Is IELTS Online or the at-home test accepted for admission?
It depends on the university. Some accept IELTS Online for admission and others require a test-centre sitting, and either way that is a separate question from whether the Department of Home Affairs will accept it for the student visa. Confirm the university's rule and the visa route's rule before you book.
How close are these practice bands to a real result?
Listening and Reading are marked against official-style conversion tables and reported as estimates with a stated margin, because real IELTS re-equates every version. Writing feedback is a labelled practice estimate across the four official criteria and is never presented as an examiner's mark.
