IELTS requirements for PhD admission
Doctoral admission is entry to supervised research rather than a taught degree, and the English condition is shaped to fit that: a research programme is assessed against IELTS Academic and expressed component by component, with Writing usually the tallest hurdle because a doctorate is delivered on the page. No country fixes one PhD number — the graduate school, the department and, frequently, the supervisor who would take you on each feed into the figure you must clear. Understanding how that figure is built matters more than memorising any single headline band.

Which variant a PhD application is read against
Research study is academic in nature, so a doctoral application is assessed against IELTS Academic — the version whose Reading and Writing tasks mirror the source-heavy work a researcher actually does. General Training serves migration and work-experience routes and is not used for research entry. The two versions share the same Listening and Speaking papers; only Reading and Writing Task 1 diverge, so rehearse on the Academic paper your file will be judged against.
There is no nationwide PhD score to look up. A graduate school publishes a floor, and the department, the supervisor or a funder can push it higher, so your opening move is to find the precise per-component figure on your own programme's page rather than trust one headline number. Verify the current minimums, and how recently your certificate must be dated, on the university's own admissions pages before you book a sitting.

Why Writing usually carries the higher bar
A doctorate is, ultimately, delivered in prose — a thesis running to tens of thousands of words, alongside journal papers, a literature review and the grant or conference writing that fills the years between. For that reason research programmes commonly pin a Writing floor at, or above, their headline band, refusing to let a strong Listening or Reading result mask thinner written English.
Speaking is far from ignored, and several programmes set a floor on it too: the viva voce is a spoken defence of the thesis, and many doctoral candidates present at seminars and conferences or tutor undergraduates. Read the requirement as a list of per-component minimums to satisfy one by one rather than an average to reach — a healthy overall band undermined by a single weak paper can still be turned down.

Who actually sets your PhD requirement
PhD English conditions stack, and the tallest one that applies is the figure you are held to. The graduate school fixes a university-wide floor; a writing-heavy department or faculty may sit above it; and the supervisor lined up for your project can request stronger written or spoken English for the work itself. The institutional minimum marks the bottom of the range, never the top.
Funding introduces a further tier. A research-council studentship, a scholarship or an outside sponsor may bolt on its own English clause, and where a doctorate feeds a regulated profession an accreditation body can add yet another floor. Work through every source that touches your case — university, department, supervisor and funder — and confirm each one's live requirement at source, since all of these are policy-set and shift over time.

Practising for the computer-delivered Academic test
Most centres now deliver IELTS Academic on screen, and that interface — Listening audio played once with a brief review window, on-screen passage highlighting, and a typed Writing box with a running word count — is precisely what CD IELTS Prep mirrors. Working through full timed mocks in the identical software takes the format off the table on the day, so the exam probes your English rather than your comfort with the screen.
Since a doctoral bar is set per component, rehearsal should be as well. The reports page splits your accuracy by question type inside each paper, so you can pinpoint the skill dragging your profile down — for research-bound candidates that is usually Writing — and target it. The samples library sets one prompt answered at band 6.5, 7.5 and 9 side by side with the differences called out, and the writing checker returns a structured four-criterion practice estimate on answers you write yourself.

How a PhD English requirement is usually built
Research degrees are assessed against IELTS Academic and set the bar component by component, not on the overall band alone — with Writing typically weighted hardest. These are the durable patterns; the graduate school and your supervisor fix the actual numbers, so confirm them on the programme page.
| Component | Typical expectation for a PhD | Why it is weighted this way |
|---|---|---|
| Overall band | Commonly quoted in the 6.5–7.0 range, occasionally higher | The baseline floor the graduate school publishes for research students |
| Writing | Often the highest per-skill floor — set at or above the overall band | A thesis, papers and a literature review are all judged as writing |
| Speaking | A per-skill floor, frequently at the overall band | The viva, seminars, conferences and any teaching you take on |
| Reading | A per-skill floor, at or near the overall band | Sustained reading of dense, specialist literature |
| Listening | A per-skill floor, at or near the overall band | Supervision, lab meetings and lectures in your field |
No band figure here is a fixed rule — each is set by the institution and can be raised by a department, a supervisor or a funder. Writing-heavy fields such as the humanities and social sciences tend to sit at the top of the range. Always confirm the exact per-skill minimums on the specific programme page, and note that a result usually has to be recent when you apply.
Who can raise your PhD English bar
A PhD requirement is layered — several bodies can each add to it, and the highest one wins. This structure holds steady even though every figure is theirs to set.
| Who | What they can set |
|---|---|
| The graduate school / university | The baseline overall band and per-skill floors for all research students |
| Your department or faculty | A higher bar than the university minimum for a writing-intensive discipline |
| Your prospective supervisor | A stricter Writing or Speaking expectation for the specific project |
| A funding body or research council | Its own English condition on a studentship or scholarship |
| A professional or accreditation body | An added floor where the doctorate leads to a regulated profession |
| The student visa route | An English condition usually met through the university's own assessment, not a separate PhD band |
The number you must hit is the highest of whichever of these apply to you — the university minimum is a floor, not a ceiling. Confirm each with the source that owns it before booking, and treat any figure you find quoted elsewhere as needing verification.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for a PhD?
Academic. Doctoral study is academic work, and research admission is assessed against IELTS Academic almost without exception. General Training covers migration and work-experience routes instead. Listening and Speaking are common to both papers, but Reading and Writing Task 1 differ, so prepare on the Academic version.
What IELTS score does a PhD require?
Overall figures for research degrees are widely quoted around the 6.5 to 7.0 mark, sometimes above it, but no national standard exists — the graduate school sets a floor and your department, supervisor or funder can lift it. Check the per-component minimums on your specific programme page and confirm them on the university's admissions pages before you book.
Why is the Writing requirement often higher for a PhD?
Because the doctorate is produced as writing — a long thesis, plus papers, a literature review and funding bids. Research programmes therefore often set a Writing floor at or above the overall band, so a strong score elsewhere cannot offset weaker written English. Writing is the component most research-bound applicants have to raise.
Can a supervisor or department set a higher score than the university minimum?
Yes. The university-wide figure is the bottom of the range, not the top. A writing-heavy department, or a supervisor wanting stronger written or spoken English for a given project, can demand more — and when several conditions apply at once, the highest is the one you must meet. Confirm the bar with your particular programme and supervisor, not the general admissions page alone.
Do funded PhDs or research council studentships have their own English rule?
They can. A studentship, scholarship or external sponsor may attach its own English clause on top of the university's, and a doctorate leading to a regulated profession may carry an accreditation body's floor as well. Verify the requirement each funder or body owns at source, since these are policy-set and can change.
Can I practise the exact computer-delivered Academic format here?
Yes. Every mock recreates the computer-delivered Academic interface used at centres: Listening audio played once with a review window, timed sections, on-screen highlighting, and typed answers with a live word count — so the day tests your English, not unfamiliar software.
