IELTS requirements for US universities
US university admission reads one test in particular — IELTS Academic, marked on the 9-band scale in half-band steps — yet no federal or accreditation body fixes a single band for the whole country. Each university, and frequently each department, publishes its own overall requirement, and because American admissions grew up around TOEFL, many still state that requirement as a TOEFL iBT figure. Your job is to read your program's exact wording and, wherever only a TOEFL number appears, carry it back to an IELTS band through the official concordance.

Who sets the IELTS bar at a US university?
No federal department, no accreditor, and no testing authority publishes a nationwide IELTS band for the United States. The requirement is decided one institution at a time, and inside a large university a graduate school or a single department will often post a higher figure than the central admissions office lists — so the band you are actually held to sits on your program's own page, not the university's headline admissions page. As a rule the figures rise with selectivity: two-year colleges lowest, the most competitive research universities highest, with bachelor's and master's study spread between.
So the opening move is reconnaissance, not a booking confirmation. Pin down the overall band your course names, note any minimum it attaches to a single skill, and check whether your department has quietly set a tougher figure than the graduate school's blanket line. The tier table below gives observed ranges to aim near while you hunt the real number down.

When a school quotes only TOEFL, read the concordance
The United States is the one major destination where the English requirement is as likely to be written in TOEFL iBT points as in IELTS bands, and a share of programs still print only the TOEFL figure. That is rarely an obstacle: well over 99% of US institutions that take TOEFL take IELTS as well, the Ivy League included. When a course names a TOEFL number but no band, the official IELTS Partners–ETS concordance lines the two scales up, so you can see which point on the 9-band Academic scale clears the stated iBT score.
That mapping is a fixed, published table — unlike a deadline or a fee it has no expiry date, which is exactly why admissions offices keep leaning on it. Use it to convert a TOEFL-only line into an IELTS target, then send one email to confirm the program takes IELTS at all, since a small number of departments still specify a single test by name.

Per-module floors, waivers and conditional admission
One overall band seldom settles it, because the US 9-band result is reported skill by skill and programs read it that way. Selective and postgraduate courses routinely attach a minimum to individual modules — most often Writing and Speaking, since those signal readiness for seminar work and for teaching-assistant duties — so a healthy average with one soft skill can still be turned down. Treat the requirement as four numbers, not one.
Two things can rescue a shortfall. Many universities drop the test requirement altogether after several years of full-time study in English, so if your schooling was English-medium, look up the exemption rule before you pay for a sitting. Others admit conditionally through a pathway: a gentler entry band matched with an intensive-English or bridging term once you arrive. Both are set institution by institution, so verify each on the course page itself.

Practising for the computer-delivered Academic test
US test centres run IELTS on computer, and that on-screen environment — Listening audio that plays once with a brief review pass, click-and-highlight tools, and a Writing box with a running word count — is precisely what CD IELTS Prep mirrors. Sitting full, timed Academic mocks inside the same software means the exam measures your English rather than your fluency with an unfamiliar interface under pressure.
And because US programs lean so heavily on per-skill minimums, rehearsal should be split by skill too. The reports page resolves your accuracy by question type inside each module, so rather than replaying whole papers you can pinpoint where the marks drain away and drill just that — while the writing checker returns a structured, four-criterion practice estimate on answers you write yourself.

Typical IELTS band by institution tier
American requirements bunch into tiers rather than following a rule; the bands below are ranges observed across admissions, not published minimums, and are useful only for aiming while you find your program's actual figure.
| Institution tier | Typical IELTS overall | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Community & two-year colleges | 5.5 - 6.0 | Usually the gentlest bar; many pair entry with ESL bridging |
| Undergraduate (bachelor's) | 6.0 - 6.5 | A single-skill minimum frequently rides above the overall band |
| Graduate (master's / PhD) | 6.5 - 7.0 | The department can pitch higher than the graduate school does |
| Most selective universities | 7.0 - 7.5 | Writing and Speaking floors are the usual stumbling block |
These are ranges seen across US admissions, not a published standard — no central authority fixes a US university minimum. The band you must actually hit is your program's own; read the course page rather than the institution's headline admissions line, and note any single-skill floor.
IELTS to TOEFL iBT concordance
When a program prints only a TOEFL number, this is the official IELTS Partners–ETS mapping admissions offices use to read an IELTS band across.
| IELTS band | TOEFL iBT range |
|---|---|
| 8.0 | 110 - 120 |
| 7.5 | 102 - 109 |
| 7.0 | 94 - 101 |
| 6.5 | 79 - 93 |
| 6.0 | 60 - 78 |
The concordance is a stable published mapping, not a fee or cut-off, so it does not expire. It tells you which IELTS band clears a TOEFL requirement, but a school may still name IELTS separately — check the program page for both, and confirm Academic is the variant it reads.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum IELTS score for US universities?
No. Nothing sets a band for the whole country — the figure is chosen institution by institution, and often tightened again by a department or graduate school. Verify it on your exact course page, because a department can demand more than the university's headline number, and watch for any minimum pinned to a single skill.
Do US universities accept IELTS if they only list a TOEFL score?
Almost always. More than 99% of US institutions that accept TOEFL accept IELTS too, the Ivy League among them. Where a course states only a TOEFL iBT figure, run it through the IELTS-TOEFL concordance to find the matching band, then confirm the program takes IELTS before you book, as a few departments still name one test.
Which IELTS should I take for US university admission — Academic or General Training?
Academic. US degree admission reads IELTS Academic, whose Reading and Writing are built on university-style texts and tasks; General Training is not accepted for degree entry. Listening and Speaking are identical in both versions, but Reading and Writing Task 1 differ, so prepare on the Academic papers specifically.
Do US programs require a minimum in each module?
Often. Selective and graduate courses regularly set a minimum on separate modules — Writing and Speaking most of all — alongside the overall band, so a strong average with one weak skill can still miss. Because the 9-band result is reported per skill, read the requirement as four figures on the course page, not a single one.
Can I get in with a lower IELTS band?
Sometimes. Plenty of universities waive the test entirely after several years of full-time English-medium study, so check the exemption rule if that fits you. Others offer conditional or pathway entry — a lower starting band paired with an intensive-English or bridging term on arrival. Both vary by institution, so confirm them on your course page.
How recent does my IELTS result need to be for US admissions?
IELTS results are widely treated as current for about two years, but each university sets its own acceptance window and some are tighter. Time your sitting so the result is still comfortably valid when applications go in, and check the exact recency rule on the course page rather than assuming a fixed span.
