IELTS for New Zealand universities
Every one of New Zealand's eight universities reads IELTS Academic, and what marks the New Zealand route out is how the score is read: an overall band paired with a floor in each of the four skills, spelled out on offer letters as 'no band below'. No single figure applies across the country — universities publish their own thresholds, and the regulators behind licensed professions publish higher ones — so the band that matters to you is the one printed on your own programme's admission page. As a rule of thumb undergraduate entry sits around a single band and taught postgraduate entry roughly half a band above it, with that per-skill minimum applying at every level.

Which IELTS do you need for New Zealand universities?
Admission to all eight New Zealand universities runs on IELTS Academic. General Training belongs to the migration and employment streams, so unless a particular provider names it, Academic is the paper to book. Because the Listening and Speaking sections are word-for-word identical across the two versions, that half of your preparation stays valid even if a visa route later has you sit General Training.
Standard-setting here is devolved rather than central. Alongside the universities, the wider tertiary system — Te Pūkenga's institutes and NZQA-quality-assured private providers — each publish their own English thresholds, and departments within a university often pitch above the institution's baseline. Read the admission page for the exact degree you are applying to, not a generic 'international students' overview.

What band do New Zealand universities ask for?
There is no country-wide requirement to quote; every university publishes its own. What stays consistent is the shape of the ask: undergraduate entry sits around a single band, taught postgraduate entry roughly half a band above it, and doctoral entry at that postgraduate level or higher depending on the faculty. Foundation and pathway programmes sit below all of these, because their purpose is to lift your English to degree-entry level.
Degrees that end in professional registration break the pattern. Nursing, teaching and medicine carry distinctly higher English bars, and those are fixed by the relevant regulator rather than the university admissions office. The tables below give the ranges to calibrate against; the figure that actually binds you is the one on your programme page or, for a licensed profession, the regulator's.

The per-component floor: why the overall band isn't enough
New Zealand offers almost always couple two conditions: an overall band and a minimum in each of the four skills, written as 'no band below 5.5' or 'no band below 6.0'. Under that model a strong average cannot paper over one weak paper — a candidate who clears the overall figure but drops half a band in Writing can still fall outside the offer, while a flat profile at the same overall band meets it.
That is why skill-by-skill preparation is the efficient path here. The reports in these mocks break your accuracy down by question type inside each module, so instead of re-sitting whole papers and hoping the weak skill drifts upward, you can locate exactly where marks are leaking — matching headings in Reading, say — and drill that one area until it clears the floor.

Practising for the computer-delivered format
New Zealand test centres offer computer-delivered IELTS, and its on-screen behaviour — Listening audio that plays once with a brief review window, highlighting and note-taking on the passage, and a typed Writing box with a running word count — is exactly what these mocks recreate. Rehearsing full timed papers in that same environment takes the software out of the equation, so on the day it is your English being measured, not your familiarity with the interface.
For the visa itself, Immigration New Zealand usually leans on the English-language standard your education provider has already applied rather than setting a separate IELTS bar for the student visa — clear the university's requirement and the visa's language question is largely settled. Check the current position on Immigration New Zealand's official pages before you lodge an application.

Typical IELTS Academic bands by New Zealand study level
New Zealand institutions cluster around these ranges, but each university and NZQA-quality-assured provider publishes its own threshold — confirm the figure on your specific programme page.
| Study level | Typical IELTS Academic ask |
|---|---|
| Foundation / pathway programme | 5.0 - 5.5 overall, floor around 5.0 |
| Undergraduate degree | 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5 |
| Taught postgraduate (master's, PG diploma) | 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 |
| PhD / research degree | 6.5 overall or higher, set by faculty |
These are observed ranges to calibrate against, not official minimums — the institution's programme page is the authority. Nearly every offer states a per-component floor ('no band below…') alongside the overall band, so a single weak module can block an otherwise qualifying score.
Regulated programmes set higher, per-component bars
For degrees leading to professional registration, the regulator — not the university — sets the English standard, and it is read per component. These are set by policy; confirm the current figure and any two-sitting rules with the body named before booking.
| Programme / registration | Who sets it | Typical standard |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing & midwifery | Nursing Council of New Zealand | Academic 7.0 in every component (or OET B) |
| Teaching / initial teacher education | Teaching Council of Aotearoa NZ | 7.0 overall, 7.0 in Speaking & Listening (Academic or General) |
| Medicine (IMG registration) | Medical Council of New Zealand | Academic 7.5 overall, 7.0 in each (or OET B) |
These per-skill minimums are set by the professional body, not the university, and can often be met across two sittings under each body's own conditions — always verify the current policy on the regulator's site.

Frequently asked questions
Do New Zealand universities want IELTS Academic or General Training?
IELTS Academic. General Training is aimed at migration and employment applications, whereas degree entry at all eight New Zealand universities runs on Academic. Since Listening and Speaking are identical in both versions, that preparation still counts if a later visa step asks for General Training.
What IELTS score do New Zealand universities require?
No figure applies nationwide — each university publishes its own, and departments can pitch above the institution baseline. The pattern to expect is undergraduate entry around a single band, taught postgraduate entry roughly half a band higher, and regulated professional degrees higher still. Confirm the exact requirement on the admission page for your specific programme.
Is there a minimum in each band as well as an overall score?
Yes, and it is central to how New Zealand reads a result. Offers almost always name a per-skill floor — 'no band below 5.5' or 'no band below 6.0' — alongside the overall band, so one weak module can cost you the place even when your average qualifies. Prepare against your weakest skill, not just the overall figure.
Do I need an IELTS score for a New Zealand student visa?
Immigration New Zealand generally accepts the English-language standard your education provider has set rather than imposing its own IELTS minimum for the student visa, so meeting the university's requirement typically settles the language question. Verify the current rules on Immigration New Zealand's official pages before applying.
What IELTS score do teaching and nursing in New Zealand require?
More than ordinary admission, and it is the professional body that fixes it — read skill by skill rather than as a single average. The Nursing Council and the Teaching Council each publish their own standards, with the strongest demands falling on specific skills. Check the current figure and any two-sitting rules on the regulator's own site; the table above summarises where each one sits.
How close are these practice bands to a real result?
Listening and Reading are converted with official-style tables and shown as estimates with a stated margin, because live IELTS equates every version and the cut points shift a little between forms. Writing feedback is a labelled four-criterion practice estimate and is never dressed up as an examiner's mark.
